In case you are wondering what military helicopter are doing near Veterans Park tonight at 6 pm

Image
This is a site to be seen for sure. Black Hawk Helicopters are not something you see landing in Oconee County every day. I have been so focused on coaching soccer that I did not even know there were functioning tennis courts at the Oconee Veterans Park. Maybe we should have built a helicopter landing pad near the Veterans Monument as well. Woven brightly, Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. CC: ldavol@oconee.ga.us; tlathrup@oconee.ga.us; nduka7@aol.com Date: Tue, 7 Oct 2008 09:19:19 -0400 Subject: Tonight's Events Coaches & Officials: Tonight  (Tues. 10-7) there will be a Black Hawk Helicopter landing at OVP  as part of a National Guard event. This will happen at 6:00pm, which is the kick off time for many of our U8 & U10 soccer teams.  Coaches and officials should prepare to begin games around 6:10pm to avoid any potential distraction during the game. The Black Hawk should return to flight around 7:00pm.  If games are still in progress at that ti...

Take Back Georgia, Inc. Saxby Shameless Update Dear Friends,   We are less than 30 days away from Election Day!   Latest polls show Jim Martin gaining on Saxby Shameless , but more importantly, they show that Saxby continues to drop in the polls.  As you read this email, our "Pain at the Pump" radio ad is on the airwaves across the state thanks to your support.  Those radio ads will run through this Friday, October 10, and we need to raise enough money to air our newest ad by Monday, October 13 to make sure we do not lose any momentum!   But, we're not done - our fight to send Saxby home for good is heating up.   And we are very excited to release our newest ad and to share that with you today.     We are stepping up our accountability on Saxby Shameless to make sure every voter, ...

Does anyone remember when John McCain almost ruined the Savings & Loan industry in the Keating 5 Scandal?

A Message from Max Cleland

Dear Friend, Torture, cronyism, abuse of power, flagrant disregard for our Constitution, and now what could be the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. These are just some of the reasons why we need to change course right now.   Our proud Democratic candidates are out there fighting to help us create that change come November 4th. But, I know all too well what can happen when Karl Rove smear and fear tactics are used against Democrats working for change. They did it to me in 2002. Now I'm fighting to make sure they don't get away with it again in 2008. In just 24 hours, we face a critical deadline the last chance to effectively purchase additional ad time for candidates under Republican attack to make sure they can get on the air, stay on the air and never back down. Rush a generous donation of $25, $50, or more before midnight tomorrow. http://www.dccc.org/rovetactics1 We need immediate change from the Karl Rove politics and the Bush-Cheney policies....

Tuesday Night and $76 million Epps Bridge Centre rezone from Lee Becker

Enlightening item about imminent rezone of Epps Bridge Centre after the thumbs down from NEGRDC so if you want to ask the BOC about this vote, Tuesday is your time. Lee Becker pens a thoughtful piece encompassing many of impacts of this mammoth decision.$76 million is a lot to spend during these uncertain times, and we could certainly use the economic impact, but at what cost to our way of life and traffic. The impact of our own bridge to nowhere is a question of what we allow in this Epps Bridge corridor. Is smart growth out of the question? I wish the BOC would table this and listen to James Howard Kunstler 4:00 pm Oct. 21 at UGA. Dear Friends, The Oconee County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday night is scheduled to make a crucial rezone decision regarding the proposed $76 million Epps Bridge Centre. The rezone comes before the BOC with a negative finding from the North East Georgia Regional Development Center that "the development is not in the best interest of the Region and...

Joe Walter hosts a gathering at the Yarn Barn Sunday

Image
Maybe two dozen people turned out late Sunday afternoon to support the re-election of Watkinsville City Council member Joe Walter, including Police Chief Lee O'Dillon, Mayor Jim Luken and his wife Marlene, Kathy and Jerry Chappelle, Peggy Holcomb, Council members Samantha Purcell and John Walsh, Jr. among many others. The following are a few photos of the event and surrounding area.

New High Shoals Elementary dedicated Sunday

Somebody forgot to send an invitation to North High Shoals Mayor Jeff Thomas, but otherwise everyone in the community turned out to watch City Council member Violet Dawe snip the red ribbon with help from outgoing Board of Education chair Chris Franklin Sunday at the new school in High Shoals. The following are some photos from the event. The wooden gym floor passes my inspection except there is no three-point line painted on the non-regulation court.

Please attend Oct. 9 film, " Greensboro: Closer to the Truth"

The Greensboro massacre occurred on November 3 , 1979 in Greensboro, North Carolina , United States . In the shoot-out, five marchers were killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party while in a protest. It was the culmination of attempts by the Communist Workers Party to organize industrial workers, predominantly black, in the area. [1] The protesters killed were: Sandi Smith, a nurse and civil rights activist; Dr. James Waller, president of a local textile workers union who gave up his medical practice to defend workers; Bill Sampson, a Harvard University graduate in the school of divinity; Cesar Cause, an immigrant from Cuba who graduated magna cum laude from Duke University ; and Dr. Michael Nathan, chief of pediatrics at Lincoln Community Health Center in Durham, NC , a clinic that helped children from low-income families. Advance voting not yet covering Watkinsiville municipal elections

If you are one of those people like me who likes to vote in advance and as early as possible, you should know one thing: the municipal election for the Watkinsville City Council race between Joe Walter and Luke Bishop is not on the ballot yet at the either the advance voting spots in Oconee County (next to the Courthouse or at the Civic Center). In a few more days this municipal election will be included on the ballot and those who voted earlier may return to do so. Joe Walter is still having a gathering 5 pm Sunday at the Yarn Shop on Barnett Shoals Road across the street from LAD Trucking.
