Friend -- Yesterday, the President stood in front of a gathering of House Republicans and took questions for more than an hour, urging them to put aside partisanship and work together for the good of the country. MSNBC described it as going straight into "the lion's den." He was inspiring. We've highlighted some of the key moments and trust me, it's worth checking out. Once you do, please pass this along to everyone you know. This is the sort of honest dialogue and political courage that we all need to move our country forward. Let's do it together, Mitch Mitch Stewart Director Organizing for America P.S. -- There's our own Q&A session for OFA supporters with President Obama coming up on Thursday, February 4th. We really need you to attend this health care forum Thursday at the Oconee County Library in Watkinsville. From: ppriest@charter.net Date: Sun, 31 Jan 2010 19:22:39 -0500 Subject: [oconee] "Reform Forum" 7 PM Thursday in Oconee   Hello! I'm passing along a message from Michael Smith, one of the political organizers (with Russell Edwards) working to help us DEFEAT PAUL BROUN! Smith's message pertains to the "Health Care Reform Forum" scheduled Thursday in Watkinsville. The panel includes a medical billing specialist . . . a law school professor who specializes in health care policy, . . . and my wonderful husband, Neal, a local physician who is -- like the other panelists -- well versed in the proposed health care legislation. I don't normally like to promote the food at such meetings, as I KNOW that's not why you'd be coming! But we are going to have some healthy snacks and hot cider. After all, our habits -- and food ...

Blake's blog documents Democratic blow back from local GOP hypocrisy, double standards

Even though a lot of members of the Republican hierarchy would welcome the Scott Brown special Senatorial election in Massachusetts as the death knell of the Democratic party, it seems to have been something of a wake up call for some more daring outgoing activists and groups, and Athens Banner-Herald reporter Blake Aued has cataloged a couple of these in his blog on the Banner-Herald website. The first of these recent entries concerns Georgia gubernatorial candidate and current Congressman Nathan Deal , who has decided to cast his fate in the Republican primary with those who believe President Barack Obama was born elsewhere than Hawaii, despite numerous and repeated refuted and conclusive proof that he is indeed a United States citizen. Local bloggers at Georgia Liberal challenged Mr. Deal to proof conclusively that he is indeed eligible to run for Governor of Georgia , and surprise surprise, the Deal election committee was not the least bit prepared to respond to this fair inqui...

Editorial: Lawmakers should shelve stem cell bill || OnlineAthens.com

As if we needed another reason not to vote for Ralph Hudgins for Georgia Insurance Commissioner, he provided one that lives on like a bad sequel to a bad movie with this so called "Octomom" bill brought back up quite foolishly by new Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston. Talk about a "lose-lose" proposition for the people of Georgia, this is it, and I do not imagine it will help any other G.O.P. candidates garner new votes across this state with women and men of the pro-choice persuasion. We have a great stem cell scientist with Dr. Steve Stice and in no way should we constrain his science that could result in all kinds of cures for various diseases. Remember Nancy Reagan is for stem cell research. Editorial: Lawmakers should shelve stem cell bill || OnlineAthens.com

We don't quit

Friend -- I just finished delivering my first State of the Union, and I wanted to send you a quick note. We face big and difficult challenges. Change on the scale we seek does not come easily. But I will never accept second place for the United States of America. That is why I called for a robust jobs bill without delay. It's why I proposed a small businesses tax credit, new investments in infrastructure, and pushed for climate legislation to create a clean energy economy. It's why we're taking on big banks, reforming Wall Street, revitalizing our education system, increasing transparency -- and finishing the job on health insurance reform. It's why I need your help -- because I am determined to fight to defend the middle class, and special interest lobbyists will go all out to fight us. Help me show that the American people are ready to join this fight for the middle class -- add your name to a letter to Congress today: http://my.barackobama.com/...

Flagpole writer Maggie Summers puts a human face on the place where day laborers wait for jobs and finds out it is no longer just illegal Mexicans coming out at the road by the Home Depot in Oconee County. Best piece of local journalism I have read in years. I was unaware that Albanians are in Oconee day worker roles but am not surprised that Cedar Shoals High School attendees and others gather out there for employment.
