New candidate in Athens-Clarke County 5th District Commission race emerges to take on Bailey

Image
Athens Clarke County's coveted 5th District commissioners race just got hotter with the announcement by longtime Athens attorney and current A/CC Planning Commissioner member Dave M. Hudgins of his intention to qualify and enter the race against Flagpole and AthFest co-founder and former 40 Watt Club co-owner Jared Bailey. In the interest of full disclosure, I am employed by Hudgins in his law practice in downtown Athens. In the past I have also worked with Bailey on the early AthFests and many freelance stories in the Athens Observer, Athens Banner-Herald, Classic City Live and probably a few dozen more publications I am forgetting about in writing about bands coming to Athens to play at the 40 Watt Club.  Hudgins is married to his wife Jan, who owns Flowerland, and they have two grown children. He has worked on the lighting ordinance on the Planning Commission in his initial term there and represents the YWCO among many other clients in his 19-year practice. He ran for the C...

Jay Hanley Clarification

I  always appreciate feedback from party heads, and meant not to give the impression that Mr. Kemp consciously kept Kathy Cox on the ballot. Timing can be a cruel suitor. Again considering Oconee County is essentially Kemp's backyard, any inroads MacGinnite makes here is a considerable dent in the armor for Kemp in his battle to remain Secretary of State. Dan, I saw your blog post regarding Kathy Cox remaining on the ballot and more fodder for Kemp opponents. On that, there was nothing Secretary Kemp could do about that as Superintendent Cox withdrew after ballots info had already been sent to be prepared by ballot builders and printers therefore too late to have her name withdrawn. As in 2008 in the Oconee BOE race when Carter Brank withdrew after ballots had been prepared, notices will be placed in all precincts noting the Cox withdrawal and that any votes cast for her will be void and not counted. Thanks. Jay Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

More fodder for Brian Kemp opponents, too? Was shocked to see a staunch Republican in my subdivision with a MacGinnitte sign today. Kathy Cox leaves state superintendent race, remains on primary ballot - News - Ledger-Enquirer.com

Electronic bingo: Uncertain bet | savannahnow.com

I do not see any chance for Thurbert Baker to ride this issue into a run-off against Barnes next month unless every bingo-card toting granny in the state of Georgia decides to pick up a Democratic ballot and mark in B-8, I mean Baker for Governor. Electronic bingo: Uncertain bet | savannahnow.com

Oconee County Observations: Oconee County GOP Wants to Know if Republican Candidates are Conservative

I wish....

I wish Tammy Gilland would run against Sarah Bell for the chair of the Oconee County Board of Commissioners in two years no matter what the outcome of Gilland's race against Margaret Hale this time around. I wish the Oconee County Board of Education would have simply followed precedent in picking the replacement for Tom Breedlove from the get-go instead of getting all weak-kneed and ineffectual with their wishy-washy, spineless, gutless maneuvers of back tracking on their own policy after a Democratic candidate named Carter Strickland dared to speak the truth and call out a few of the more deserving people needing to be off of anything to do with the public educational leadership of our children. I wish that bipartisan politics really occurred in Oconee County instead of former School Board members getting sweetheart deals at inflated prices behind closed doors in secretive deals with municipal governments that have no business whatsoever getting involved in the land shenanigan...

Law agencies sharing info, getting results || OnlineAthens.com

I am all for police sharing reports with Sheriff's departments from other counties, and vice versa, and applaud Sheriff Berry for taking the lead on this one. Criminals do not respect political boundaries, so why should law enforcement? Law agencies sharing info, getting results || OnlineAthens.com

Editorial: Oconee BOE engages in political hackery || OnlineAthens.com

Once again, the BOE teaches us it is OK to change the rules midway through the process when the outcome does not suit those in charge. I personally believe that all sitting members of the Oconee County Board of Education should be recalled or resign immediately. There are those who are convinced this is not that big a deal, but I strongly urge all Oconee County voters in the Republican primary to deliver an unmistakeable message to Mack Guest and vote for challenger Mark Thomas instead. Apologize to BP?

Image
Friend -- When BP CEO Tony Hayward testified before Congress this morning, many expected to hear him apologize for the disaster his company has caused. Instead, GOP Congressman Joe Barton was the one saying he was sorry -- to BP. In his opening statement, Barton, the top Republican on the committee overseeing the oil spill and its aftermath, delivered a personal apology to the oil giant. He said the $20 billion fund that President Obama directed BP to establish to provide relief to the victims of the oil disaster was a "tragedy in the first proportion." Other Republicans are echoing his call. Sen. John Cornyn said he "shares" Barton's concern. Rep. Michele Bachmann said that BP shouldn't agree to be "fleeced." Rush Limbaugh called it a "bailout." The Republican Study Committee, with its 114 members in the House, called it a "shakedown." Let's be clear. This fund is a major victory for the people of the Gulf. It...
