Natasha Tretheway's "Native Guard" is Oconee Democrats' monthly selection

Image
Hello on this rainy day perfect for reading! The book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats is celebrating National Poetry Month by reading a Pulitzer Prize-winning book of poetry by Natasha Trethewey titled “Native Guard.” The book is partly about black soldiers (Louisiana’s Native Guard) who fought in the Civil War; the opening section is about her mother. Trethewey has a UGA connection; she earned an undergraduate degree in English here (and was head of the cheerleading squad!). She now directs the Creative Writing program at Emory. She’s currently serving a second term as Poet Laureate. She’s working with the PBS NewsHour on a project called “Where Poetry Lives." Our book group meets upstairs at Chops and Hops on the last Wednesday of the month ( April 30th ). Many of us arrive at 6:30 to order dinner or drinks; the discussion starts right at 7. Newcomers are always welcome! We are a lively and friendly group. Read on! Pat

Gov. Deal, swear to tell the truth.

Subject: Gov. Deal, swear to tell the truth. Reply-To: bryan@bettergeorgia.com   Today, Gov. Nathan Deal   cost Georgia taxpayers $700,000 in damages   because of his efforts to block an investigation into his 2010 campaign finances. But where was Gov. Deal? He refused to take the oath and testify in his own defense or for the State of Georgia. He refused to put his hand on a Bible and swear to tell the truth. If there is another side of the story, he's the one who knows it. But Gov. Deal didn't show up. He fought to   keep his campaign finance records   secret . He fought to   avoid answering questions in court . And he fought to   avoid a jury's scrutiny . When Gov. Deal had a chance to speak the truth, he was afriad to do it. Paul Broun, Jack Kingston resort to impersonating and demonizing Democratic leaders in campaign ad misfires

The mere fact that these two Congressmen do not have the decency to demonstrate their leadership abilities with honest criticism and instead hiring voice impersonators to imitate President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi adequately show their contempt for the voters of Georgia and the estimation of just how gullible they think we really are. Time to send them home from Washington and back to Georgia. The Editor's Desk: A tale of two political ads

Brazile: Georgia might become first 'purple' state

Georgia could be the first southern state to move out of firm Republican control to become a so-called "purple" state, where neither the GOP nor Democrats dominate voter rolls,  according to political analyst and strategist Donna Brazile. "I think if any state in the South can turn from red to blue, it's Georgia," said Brazile, who became the first African American to  direct a major presidential campaign when she became Al Gore's campaign manager in 2000. Georgia studying ways to improve hoops attendance | Bulldogs Beat with Seth Emerson | Macon.com

There are many simple methods to improve attendance at the Stegeman Coliseum for UGA home games. I would begin with eliminating permanently admission prices for all students, not just University of Georgia students. Secondly, and no one has ever been able to tell me why there is such a huge difference in price, make the season tickets for men's and women's hoops exactly the same. Third, never have late start tip off times except maybe road games. Fourth, get better half time performers, like local musicians such as Randall or Isaac Bramblett, John Berry, and others appropriate for all ages. Fifth, improve the food in the concession stands, and don't have BBQ at one, chicken at the other, and pretzels at the third. Hire a chef. Have more choices. Fifth, have some better non-conference early season games against interesting opponents: Iowa, Drake, UNI, Grinnell, Colorado State, Wyoming, Indiana, Mercer and Duke would be on the top of my schedule requests.
