COMPUTER FRAUD: On Feb. 25, Cpl. Mark Smith met with a 62-year-old resident of High Shoals Road, Bishop, who explained he was defrauded of $998 when he fell for a computer upgrade scheme. The man explained he sent $749 by Western Union to a person in Mississippi for upgrades to his home computer. He received a call the next day asking for $249 more, which he sent. When the person called wanting more money, the Bishop man asked for a refund and was told he could get the refund if he sent a $499 transaction fee. As Smith gathered information from the victim, a call came in from a person identifying himself as from Western Union and asking for the $499 transaction fee. When Smith got on the line, the man became evasive and hung up on the deputy. BURGLARY: On Feb. 25, Deputy Samuel Smith met with a resident of the 4000 block of Hog Mountain Road, who reported someone entered his garage and stole a German Shepherd dog, a chain saw and some shears, all valued at more than $2,500.
