Local clean-water activist Vicki Soutar could have borrowed from a southern gospel song: “Step into the water. Wade out a little bit deeper.” Soutar and others encouraged those at the Oconee Library last week to join in a coordinated effort to monitor and test Oconee County’s creeks. Utility Director Wayne Haynie and Erin Carlson, wastewater supervisor, spoke to the small group gathered, reviewing some of the talking points from an earlier meeting. Not much had changed in the four days, but Haynie wanted to clarify a pronoun used in a previous story. The 2016 Southworks Exhibition will feature “ENCORE16,” a special showing of acclaimed artworks that were shown at previous Southworks exhibitions. The exhibit opens Friday with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation in downtown Watkinsville. The reception is free and open to the public. Southworks also features the Southworks National Juried Exhibit which showcases 79 artworks from 52 local and national artists whose work was chosen from hundreds of applications received from across the country. All work in the exhibit was selected by the juror, Stephen Wicks, who is a curator at the Knoxville Museum of Art, where he has worked for more than 20 years. He was previously curator of collections at the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Ga. The ENCORE16 exhibit showcases work from artists whose works were shown at previous Southworks exhibitions. “It is a rare event to see artwork of this caliber presented together,” said OCAF gallery director...

Oconee homeowners wary of proposed sewer line along Calls Creek

Two teenagers broke into a closed manufacturing plant in Watkinsville recently and caused thousands in damage. “It’s pegged at $9,000, but I thought it would be double that,” Watkinsville Police Chief Lee O’Dillon said Monday about the damage to the Southwire Corp. plant on Barnett Shoals Road. The plant closed operations a few years ago. The teens, ages 16 and 13, were each charged with burglary and trespassing and will be prosecuted in juvenile court, the chief said. Another 13-year-old boy was charged with trespassing for entering the facility, but not on the day of the vandalism. The break-in was discovered on Feb. 29 by Southwire maintenance employees who arrived to find the damage to the plant’s equipment, along with heavy damage to a computer room. Fire extinguishers were discharged and a golf cart was used during some of the vandalism, according to O’Dillon.
