Kerstin Emerson  joined the University of Georgia’s Institute of Gerontology in August, 2010.  She has a strong academic background in gerontology, holding both a Masters and a PhD in gerontology. Prior to her faculty appointment, she worked for two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Sealy Center on Aging at the University of Texas Medical Branch, where she studied the health of older Hispanics. As a gerontologist interested in aging and health, her research uses large secondary data analyses to explore aging issues in the United States.  Her research includes loneliness among older adults, exploring the impact of immigration on mental health, as well as the influence of neighborhood characteristics on physical and mental health outcomes.  Currently Dr. Emerson is studying loneliness among older adults in dif...

Burglars hit at least five homes in Bishops Vineyard subdivision Friday night/Saturday morning

At least five homes on Watkinsville's west side were burglarized between 12:30 am and 6:30 am Saturday morning, April 30, 2016 in and around the Bishop's Vineyard subdivision, where Mayor Charles Ivie resides as well. Among the victims of this crime spree were Kumquat Mae restaurant owner Tracey Stewart, who had a locked Apple computer removed from her automobile, and her neighbor was similarly robbed. " Someone came through my neighborhood last night & stole valuables from my car & my neighbors car. If anyone has any info, please message me." written on her Facebook page from the former Watkinsville, now Athens restaurant owner. " At this point it was 5 houses. So far 5 police reports filed. It occurred between 12:30 & 6:30 am."

Oconee County tallied four goals in the first half and four in the second half Thursday to blank Rockmart 8-0 in the first round of the Class AAA state soccer tournament. The Warriors — ranked No. 8 in Class AAA and the top seed from Region 8-AAA  —scored first on a Thomas Murray goal, assisted by Joseph Lattin. Nick Morin followed with the second and third goals, assisted by Murray and Timothy Simpson, respectively. Deal in works for purchase of 19th-century Watkinsville house

A retired educator who has spent years renovating and living in older homes is working out a deal to purchase and restore an 1800s Watkinsville home that at one time might have been sold piecemeal as architectural salvage. UGA students killed in Oconee Co crash | Classic City Today

The Georgia State Patrol investigation continues, with no indication that alcohol was involved in that Wednesday night car crash on the Greensboro Highway in Oconee County. Four University of Georgia students, all from metro Atlanta, were killed in the wreck. 21 year-old Agnes Kim of Snellville was driving the car that collided with a second vehicle. She was hospitalized in critical condition at Athens Regional Medical Center. Killed were two UGA students from Alpharetta: Kayla Canedo was 19 years old, Brittany Feldman was 20. Also killed were 19 year-old Christina Semeria of Milton and Halle Scott of Dunwoody. Scott was also 19.
