Local musician toured with the late Leon Russell

Local musician toured with the late Leon Russell : Jay Rodgers speaks of the late Leon Russell not in the sappy palaver of a distanced fan but in the jocular patois shared by musicians on the road.

Watkinsville must wait on Sunday sales

Watkinsville must wait on Sunday sales : Watkinsville City Council’s procrastination on a Sunday sales referendum will necessitate a special election in early 2017, mirroring the same breakdown that occurred in 2014 when the city failed to put liquor by the drink on the November ballot.

Lee Becker's write up of the Stacey Evans speech at the Oconee County Library

Image
Stacey Evans, Democratic Representative from Smyrna to the Georgia House, told Oconee County Democrats not to criticize the voters for the defeat of Hillary Clinton and election of Donald Trump on Nov. 8 in Georgia. The Democrats didn’t get out enough of their voters to win the election in Georgia and across the country, she said. Evans said the Democratic Party is on the right side of issues facing Georgia and that she believes the party will have success in the state in the near future not only because of the changing demographics but also because issues the party champions have broad popular support. Evans was speaking to a group of 30–all but four of them women–at the Oconee County Library in Watkinsville on Nov. 13, five days after Donald Trump swept to victory with the support of the majority of the voters in Oconee County and the state. Evans told the group to start working harder at the local level to get Democrats elected to local and state offices. ...

I am grateful to be joining this august body otherwise known as the Watkinsville City Council in January 2017. You are welcome to come to the swearing in ceremony 7:00 pm Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the Watkinsville Community Center on VFW Drive (off State Route 53/Experiment Station Road) in lovely downtown Watkinsville. This will be the next to last meeting where I am on this side of the rail. The Watkinsville City Council approved the agenda with due diligence and only one vote after an applicant left the lectern. Various beer and wine as well as distilled spirits applications were approved at the usual places with the retiring gentlemen I am replacing remaining steadfast in his opposition to vote in the affirmative for any of the applicants.  So no unanimity, but all passed after brief inquiries.  I am looking forward to working with Watkinsville City Council members Marci Campbell, Connie Massey, and the Brian Brodrick, along with fellow new council me...

Last night's Oconee County Democratic Committee was more packed and powerful than ever

Image
State Rep. Stacey Evans of Cobb County I was amazed at the overflow turn out at the Oconee County Democratic Committee, but given the fact that earlier in the week I was confirmed as the winner in the very close nonpartisan Watkinsville City Council by a two vote margin that withstood UOCAVA (three overseas votes of Watkinsville residents evidently went 2 to 1 for me), and then coupled with the lingering shock from the Presidential election, spurred a crowd where we had to get chairs at least a half dozen times from a nearby closet. Thank you to everyone who voted for me, and I am honored to be the first Democrat elected in a long time in a contested race in Oconee County, Georgia, the reddest of the red counties has a blue dot on the map in the county seat of Watkinsville. Stacey Evans addressed a large audience Sunday at the Library 45 people crammed in a conference room to hear about the amazingly frank talk from Cobb County Democratic State Representative Stacey Godfrey...

Thank you very much for your votes for me

Extremely grateful for the trust and confidence the 569 Watkinsville voters put in me last night, and I pledge I will work very hard to earn the trust of the 568 voters who did not chose me. I look forward to the resolution of this very close municipal election and will learn something new every day in service to Watkinsville. I appreciate the campaign run by my opponent, and pledge to work with him and his supporters no matter the final certified outcome.
