Views fall along party lines at Oconee political forum

Views fall along party lines at Oconee political forum : It was easy to tell Republicans from Democrats during Monday’s candidate forum for two open seats in the Georgia House, but voters might have a more difficult time sorting out who they want to vote for among three Republican contenders in one of the races.

Kay Keller named UNG's new econ & development leader

The University of North Georgia has a new leader of economic and community development at its helm, recently announcing the change in directorship. Kay Keller, a Watkinsville resident, started in the position Sept. 25, replacing previous director Tate O’Rouke. Prior to accepting the job, she most recently served as president of the Oconee Chamber of Commerce. There, she managed the chamber’s operations and played an active role in “new businesses development and regional economic development projects.” Under her leadership, chamber membership grew from 450 to 590 members. “I’m proud and excited to be part of a university that is an active partner in the economic success of northeast Georgia,” Keller said. “UNG’s growing influence will help develop a workforce that will enhance the quality of life for everyone in the region.” UNG has more than 19,000 students on five campuses: Blue Ridge, Cumming, Dahlonega, Gainesville and Oconee County. “UNG is a significant economic e...

Dr. Russ Page moderated a direct question-and-answer session for all six candidates for the 117th and 119th Special Elections in Oconee and Clarke counties Monday evening at the Oconee Veterans Park near Butler's Crossing in unincorporated Watkinsville to a packed house of curious voters and supporters. Dr. Lee Becker of Oconee County Observations and the University of Georgia journalism school  video-taped the ongoings, and professor Sarah Bell was quick on her feet foisting the wireless microphone to the many attendees in the special events room of the park off of State Route 53 (Hog Mountain Road) thanks to the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department. Oconee County Democratic candidate Jonathan Wallace is running against Oconee County Republicans Tom Lord, Steven Strickland, and Marcus Wiedower in Georgia's free-for-all known as a special election. The conventional local political wisdom residual from when I ran in similar circumstances in 2011 is that the...

Pictures of people putting flags in the ground at North Oconee 9/11/2017

I must admit I had a little apprehension about the flag planting ceremony in commemoration of the events of September 11, 2001 at North Oconee High School. My trepidation was misplaced however, and everyone was welcome, even my dog Katrina, North Oconee High School teacher Kirk Shook invited me specifically and was very busy organizing a very well run show out at the school in Bogart. No one asked my political affiliation, and I saw one Make America Great Again shirt (I say it is already great) and one Kemp for Governor shirt. There was one girl wearing a traditional Muslim head wear and no one shouted any profanities or raised an eyebrow to my point of view. I wore my Come Home America shirt from the George S. McGovern school from Dakota Wesleyan. There were people of color and at least several candidates and elected officials besides myself. Again nothing but kudos for Mr. Shook and Oconee County Republican Committee chair Tammy Gilland and all the students at No...
