On Tuesday, the Banner-Herald endorsed incumbent Republican Bill Cowsert for the District 46 seat in the state Senate. Even though the newspaper did not endorse the Democratic challenger, Sherry Jackson, I appreciate the thoughtful approach to this race and the kind words about Jackson, the candidate I'm supporting.

The editorial board was correct in noting that Sherry is an impressive and thoughtful candidate. I believe she would make an excellent state senator. The senator from District 46 has a tough job, having to represent the diverse interests of part of Athens-Clarke County, all of Oconee County and part of Walton County. Voters may not realize the unique experiences Sherry has that would help her serve this diverse district.

Sherry was born and raised in Walton County, graduated from Monroe Area High School and has maintained her connection to that county, so she knows firsthand the needs and concerns of that constituency.

After completing her undergraduate education, Sherry attended and graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law and remained in the Athens area once she passed the bar. She began her legal career at Georgia Legal Services, representing low-income individuals, before opening her own law firm. Sherry knows firsthand the issues confronting small business owners and workers.

Representing all of the constituents of this district is always a challenge, but it's one for which Sherry is ready. She brings her lifetime of experiences, education, intellect and thoughtfulness to this task.

Sherry is the right person for the job of District 46 state senator.
