Brothers Williams, Ivie leave little doubt who runs Watkinsville

It was back to the future at the Watkinsville City Council as Mayor Charles Ivie reminisced about 1974 which was the year he was last on the council with his former council mate now Representative Chuck Williams and his brother David dominating the meeting as only they know how. It was also the first year of the Fall Festival, when it started about the size of the current Farmers Market downtown on Saturday mornings.

They managed together to keep the semi-destroyed barbecue pits high enough for the Rotary to cook their 750 chicken halves properly and the Rocket Field was declared the official venue for insurance principals for the Fall Festival as run by the Chamber of Commerce, even without an official vote (although there was a Motion and 2nd) for approval although I might've been blinded by the brilliance and radiance of the convergent Williams brothers.

There were several other glitches or reminders of parliamentary procedure needed by Mayor Ivie, none of which were the least bit detrimental to the business of the city.

The real news of the meeting was the approval of a new metal fabrication business is Advanced Quality Machining, LLC at 1260 Greensboro Highway, Suite 230. This new start up is part of the infrastructure for Caterpillar, and with be fabricating computer and controlled steel work for businesses such as Caterpillar at the brick building redone recently by Robert Bishop. There representing the business were Stephen Hicks (sales) and machinist Chris Martin for co-owner Bonny Hicks.

Also approved in the Go Flight Aviation, a mobile training simulator lab in a 6' x 14' trailer that will help pilots learn 2.5 hours training toward the private license and up to 10 hours of instrument training for prospective pilots, hopefully at flight schools. It was unclear if Councilman Brian Brodrick's request for conditional approval to not park the trailer at the house at 1081 Stone Shoals Court was included in the motion.

Mayor Ivie presented his neighbor Bess Mabrey as yard of the Month as selected by code enforcement officer Robert Hegge, he who painted the three point line on the court at Harris Shoals Park. That is where they will be getting a $850 make over with three cinder block depth after the last barbecue. Ivie also wants to update the building code and decided that two bids on handicap access ramps at Rocket Field were "too exorbinant." Council member Toby Smith made some suggestions about aligning it as close to home plate and possibly from School Street near where the wheelchair ramp is for Rocket Hall.

Also Oconee County Little League has approached the city about using Giardini Field in Harris Shoals Park after an upgrade to the field.

The new police car is here and it has been assigned to Investigator Will Horton of Police Chief Lee O'Dillon's fine local squad.  There will be a "bush hog on steroids" to take on the property between the Street Department and the Bethel Baptist church, according to Ivie.

Chuck Williams talked about ESP getting some portable classrooms installed on their property next to the Community Center. He also addressed the Republican slicing of Oconee County in half with precincts at the Friendship/Athens Academy, Bogart and Malcom Bridge area. He bragged on finally getting around to helping Bishop in their battles with the DOT over placement of a bypass around the tiny town to the south of Watkinsville.
