This week's Oconee County Farmers market

I sure hope they can figure out a way to not impede the first-ever early Saturday voting at the Board of Elections and Registration on Court Street. The market has been setting up in front of the Oconee County Court House in the Parking Lot. Of course there is plenty of parking in the back, just watch out for the bicyclists who tend to use this area as a rendezvous and or disembarking area for their 30, 40, 50 and 60 mile rides in the area and even into Morgan County. Riddle me this, what meeting did she decline to attend?

Image
I understand party allegiance, and I understand keeping appointments. But it is odd that Jennifer Riddle's opponent Pamela Lohr Hendrix can make an appearance at the Oconee County Democratic Committee meeting at 1291 Greensboro Highway at the Oconee County Government Annex meeting all of maybe five minutes away from the GOP meeting tomorrow night at the Watkinsville Community Center. We will allow Ms. Hendrix to speak first so she can hustle across our massive city to VFW Drive for the Republican meeting. I wish all the local offices were nonpartisan. Our Oconee County Democratic Committee meetings are more of a sit down at a table kind of gathering where voters ask questions of candidates and look them in the eye while hearing their responses. Yes we are fewer in number but I would like to think we more than make up for it in sincerity and a burning desire to build consensus among all voters as to the best solutions for Oconee County. As always, everyone is welcome to attend o...

Overview of 2012 Oconee County GOP Primary - 117th edition

Image
I urge everyone to grab a Republican ballot in the forthcoming primary and vote for those who they think will do the best for Oconee County, Georgia. I have had neighbors and other folks ask me to share my recommendations for this GOP primary. You do not have to declare an allegiance but you must ask for a Republican ballot when you enter the building in the next nine days of advance voting or polling place on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 to have any impact on the local leadership. Early voting has begun and it has been quite brisk at the little brick building next to the Oconee County Courthouse on Court Street in Watkinsville in what is called the Board of Elections and Registration office. I think one other person was in there yesterday when I went in there during my lunch hour. First of all, the easiest election recommendation will be for those three precincts bordering Athens-Clarke County in Malcolm Bridge, Athens Academy and Bogart that have been sliced into the new 117th ...

An opportunity to view film Carving Up Oconee

Image
Subject: opportunity to view film This was sent out by Melissa Piche and I agree with her that the film is worth seeing if you haven't already seen it.  Even if you have watching it again with a new audience and participating in the discussion afterwards might also be enlightening. I wanted to tell everyone that Celestia Sharp will be showing her film "Carving up Oconee" at the Oconee Library July 21st at 2:00. There will be a panel discussion after the showing of the Documentary. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend you take this opportunity to view it and meet and discuss the film and its pertinence to the current growth in Oconee County. This is a wonderful film and a great chance to meet Celestia. I was very enlightened by the experience.

Watkinsville grants permit to raze two buildings behind Ashford Memorial Methodist Church

Image
Two deteriorating buildings between Ashford Memorial Methodist Church and Ashford Manor Bed and Breakfast have been added to the clean up job Mayor Charles Ivie as far as tearing down old properties around Watkinsville. The house slated to be razed The Pink House as it was known and an adjacent structure were a building used by the church for years but has fallen into disrepair recently. The council joylessly approved the demolition permit unanimously without Brian Brodrick or Toby Smith present at the July meeting. Former City Attorney R. Judson Huff made an appearance before the council representing the church and clearly it was an issue longf nagging at the local congregation. Mike Link advised Huff to contact Georgia Power to get a cuff on the power line near there in case of accidental contact with the equipment necessary for the destruction of these historic but seldom used properties. Huff also inquired as to whether or not there was a gas line in the building. ...
