Graffiti near Elder Bridge is perceived as gang warning sign, call to action

Graffiti tags near Elder Bridge causes letters to be written and photos to be taken. The following are letters from Angela Helwig and Bill Zorn that have been minimally edited.

I am all for protecting Elder Mill Covered Bridge by all means necessary.

Subject: RE: elder bridge EMERGENCY!!!!

Mr. Zorn (and all),
As Director of Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission, I receive e-mails from Keep America Beautiful regarding their various programs.  One that I have mostly ignored is their "Graffiti Hurts" campaign.  I see now that I was mistaken to believe that it would not be a problem here.
Here is a link to the Graffiti Hurts website:  http://www.graffitihurts.org/.  It contains a lot of information including prevention, task force creation, best practices, etc.
There have been grants available the past few years from KAB for this program.  According to the KAB website, "In 2011, KAB expanded the national grants program and added one additional $2,500 cash grant, three $2,500 Sherwin-Williams paint supply certificates and one Q-Star FlashCAM, valued at $6,100. The FlashCAM is a deterrent system effective in preventing illegal trespassing during hours it most often occurs."  I do not know if there is any possibility we would qualify for one, but I will look into it when they announce the 2012 grant program.  My thought is to emphasize prevention.
Thank you for your alert!  Thank you everyone for your concern and any help you might give in addressing this blight!

to all my friends and neighbors

I found this gang tag on the display case next to the elder covered bridge, which i live adjacent to. i have forwarded it to Melvin Davis and Scott Berry.

I attached some photos of other bridges in Georgia which have been defaced with graffiti. there are several which have been completely covered.

we must not allow this to happen here without trying to stop it. i have suggested cameras and motion activated lights. if anyone has ideas on how to stop it, speak up!

please make your feelings known to melvin davis mdavis@oconee.ga.us
