From: Keep Oconee County Beautiful and Clean kocbc@oconee.ga.us Subject: Follow-up message from Oconee County Chairman Melvin Davis Date: May 5, 2014 at 3:32:59 PM EDT To: Keep Oconee County Beautiful and Clean kocbc@oconee.ga.us Cc: " gacoconee@gmail.com " gacoconee@gmail.com Good afternoon Oconee County: Just a quick reminder that this Saturday is the day to participate in the Great American Cleanup in Oconee County - starting at 9 am at the Oconee County Library in Watkinsville. We are so fortunate to live in such a wonderful place with rolling green hills, a pastoral setting, and small town charm.  However, as you travel the roads of Oconee County, you have likely noticed that we have a growing problem plaguing our beautiful community:  Litter. I would like to issue a person invitation on behalf of KOCBC.  May 10th is our annual Great American Clean Up in Oconee County and they need your help. You can make a big difference.  Please conside...

Harris Shoals park cleanup Saturday, April 24

I forget exactly what is the Keep Oconee Clean committee is being called right now, but they are engineering a clean up of Harris Shoals Park about a month from now, and they will be providing bags and bottled water. I have heard Esther is changing her mind about taking on Margaret Hale for the Oconee County Board of Commissioners race, but we shall see. Tammy Gilleland evidently enjoys the support of BOC chair Melvin Davis. Woven brightly, Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. Subject: Harris Shoals Dan,   If you wouldn't mind posting this on your blog, it would be much appreciated.    The creek walk and park cleanup will be Saturday, April 24, at 9:00 AM.  Should be finished by 10:30 or 11:00.  My understanding is that Esther Porter of Oconee County Clean and Beautiful is going to coordinate some volunteers, but the more the merrier.   The City will provide bags and the OCCB will provide bottled water.     Thanks,   William T. (Toby) S...

47 people turn out to clean area of Elder Mill Covered Bridge Saturday morning

Image
The weather was near perfect Saturday morning for a large contingent of people to perform the back breaking work of picking up a sadly amazing amount of garbage both on the sides of Elder Mill Road and in both branches of Rose Creek in far southern Oconee County, thanks to organizer Melissa Steele.   The fine folks of Antioch Church allowed us to gather in their fellowship hall and hear from Steele as well as people from the Altamaha Riverkeeper and locals organizing a forum later in the month.  After signing a waiver and receiving instructions, we headed out to pick up garbage. It was astonishing the amount of crap people carelessly toss out the window of their passing vehicles. We found coolers, tires, bottles and cans of every kind, large pieces of metal and the requisite cigarette wrappers and coffee cups. We filled up two large black plastic garbage bags, one with recyclables and others with generic trash of the un-recyclable variety. Equally astonishing is the fact...

Trash on the tracks

Image
This is just some of the garbage I found on a brief trespass across one backyard in Taylor's Landing and over to Farmview Drive on a brief Sunday stroll with my son. I completely respect the railroads and want to know what we can do to clean this up together with them. I also know that railroads are an imposing entity which governments such as Watkinsville cannot always cope with, but I think we can work with them to try to find a solution to keep our backyards beautiful. The litter is primarily caused by the people tossing garbage and not necessarily anything to do with the locomotives on the Norfolk Southern leased to Benny Anderson line. He has every right to park his cars anywhere he wants. I also realize there is a great deal of garbage generated by the railroads such as with old cross ties and spikes themselves but that also people whose property abuts the tracks use them as a place to dispose of their unwanted belongings. I hope we get it removed as painlessly as possible. R...

Come clean Watkinsville next weekend and get free coffee

The battle lines are drawn and Watkinsville is area of contention. Your task, should you choose to accept, is to start at the municipal boundaries of the county seat of Oconee County and pick up as much garbage from the streets as possible. Should you choose to participate in a partisan manner, you may do so with the Democratic party through Jonathan Veit (706-255-0222) or Jay Hanley with the Republican party through the Oconee Enterprise newspaper or Facebook. You can also choose to freelance or pick up garbage on your own in a non-aligned manner. The only thing required is you pick up trash on the streets of Watkinsville between 9 and 10 am Saturday, May 30.

Help us pick up trash August 23, 2008. We have a sign on the road, and we need your help to honor this designation. Woven brightly, Daniel J. Meet at the Barber Creek Fire Station (Mars Hill Road/Oconee Connector) at 8:30 a.m.. (Please be sure not to park in front of the big bay doors of the fire station.) See you next Saturday! Sarajane Love __._,_.

Please come help clean up the Oconee Connector with Oconee County Democratic Committee members and friends

Please come help pick up litter along the side of the road on the busiest thoroughfare in Oconee County, Georgia with the Oconee County Democratic Committee. Oconee Democrats, their friends, neighbors, and children are invited to meet at the Mars Hill fire station on Sat., Jan. 12, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. to clean up our mile of the Oconee Connector. Please bring a pair of work gloves and any aluminum cans you have to recycle in the firefighters' recycyling bin. Safety vests and trash bags will be provided. The Fire Chief has graciously offered the station's dumpster for our filled bags, so that is one less messy job to worry about. Lets turn out a crowd and finish this off quickly!

Local choices in development and Democratic politics

Slowly but surely the Creekside development of the cross section of Oconee, Oglethorpe and Clarke county in the Old Barnett (Shoals) Estates area inches forward, with cameras, traffic counters, surveying, et cetera near the old country club called Green Acres. Bill Paul and some supporters spoke with the Athens Banner-Herald reporter. The area in question is one of the last quaint quarters of the county, with even a few mailing addresses of that area of Oconee County called Arnoldsville. Paul's properties are on both sides of the county line for Clarke and Oconee if memory serves me correctly. He has done an amazing job restoring some old structures and an even better job organizing opposition to the proposed development. Meanwhile the Oconee County Democratic Committee continues to chug along almost unnoticed in their regular monthly meetings in the mainstream media of the three local newspapers. I suppose I can take discredit for that slip-up. I need to let them all know the n...

A little story about no trash transfer south of Watkinsville

The Oconee County government gave the big thumbs down on Matt Elder's proposed waste transfer station and dumpster stash south on Watkinsville on Highway 15 last night . God bless Post 4's Chuck Horton - who made the motion to deny - and Margaret Hale - who seconded the motion. Many people spoke out against it. Former University of Georgia football coach Ray Goff was the biggest idiot speaking out for it.
