FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Oconee County Democratic Committee will be hosting an Educational Summit on Transferable Development Rights 5 pm Sunday, February 22nd at the Oconee County Library in Watkinsville. This will be a non-partisan event featuring Dr. Russ Page talking about preserving agricultural property in the southern rural part of the county in exchange for denser zoning in the northern suburban section of the county. Next Sunday at 5 pm Watkinsville City Council member Joe Walter will be hosting an informal gathering of supporters and curious residents of the municipality seeking information about his contested re-election bid against Luke Bishop at the Yarn Shop on Barnett Shoals Road across from the industrial areas of LAD Truck Line and Southwire in the wonderfully restored barn built back by Quinton Phillips and his wife Cindy Jerrell. Joe brought by one of his second generation yard signs Saturday to tell me about it. I think I saw Luke and gave him one of those all-knowing nods as a traversed the Main Street - Simonton Bridge/Whitehall Road gauntlet toward my abode in the rare non soccer Saturday.

If anyone cares to argue why we should (or should not) continue arbitrarily attaching political parties to the campaigns for the Board of Education and Board of Commissioners, then they should attend the Oconee County Democratic Committee meeting this Primary Tuesday evening at the Board of Commissioners chambers on the second floor of the Oconee County Courthouse. Of course down on the first floor and more than likely across the street at the Board of Elections headquarters votes will be furiously tallied from the G.O.P. primary. There will surely be some cell phones ringing and texting totals Tuesday in the courthouse and elsewhere. So now that Congressman Norwood has passed, rest in peace, what should we do about setting apart the speculation and trying to figure out who can jump in the race quickest in this Athens to Augusta 10th district. Surely someone will come from Athens such as former Mayor Doc Eldridge, former State Senator and failed Ag Commissioner candidate Brian Kemp and current State Senator Ralph Hudgens. I would like to strongly encourage the Comer solon to start a campaign, because I am pretty sure he would have to resign his current seat in order to run (although I certainly may be wrong about that). Also will the special election be on the same day that Athens-Clarke County voters elect a replacement for States McCarter? Will it be the same day as the recall election in North High Shoals? There will surely be some candidates from Augusta such as R. Terry Holley in the forthcoming non-partisan election that the Governor has to set in the next 10 days.
