Paddle Georgia trek on Chattahoochee attracts Oconee paddler Becky Parker

Image
Several local residents will participate in the Georgia River Network’s Paddle Georgia trip on the Chattahoochee River that begins today. Putting canoes and kayaks in the river include Athens residents Daniel Peiken, Colin Ackerson, Sara Beresford, Daniela Di Iorio, Eleanor Mathews, Steve Moorman, Jonas Barnes, Casey Barnes and Kevin Barnes, along with Watkinsville resident Becky Styles Parker. The 110-mile trip, which begins in Cumming and ends in Franklin next Friday, is an annual canoe and kayak trip that attracts up to 400 people each year. The trip introduces citizens to the river and raises money to protect the state’s waterways. Paddle Georgia, which is in its 10th year, organizes trips on several rivers including the Flint, Broad-Savannah rivers, Oconee and Altamaha. “Last year, the event sold out in less than 24 hours,” River Network Executive Director April Ingle said. “The response has b

Deal brags about a $750 million education shortfall

Image
Subject: Deal brags about a $750 million education shortfall It shouldn't be a surprise by now, but Gov. Deal is at it again. This time he's bragging about how he increased funding for public schools. But sadly, Gov. Deal isn't being honest with you. The new budget that Gov. Deal is bragging about still shorts our public schools around $750 million dollars. Gov. Deal claims his budget is a gift for public education, but sadly, it's yet another massive shortfall for our already struggling schools. Over the last decade, Georgia cut an estimated $8 billion from public school funding . Gov. Deal is responsible for $4.1 billion in cut funding over the last 3 years. That's right, Gov. Deal's responsible for more than half of all cuts to public education over the last decade, and he's done it in just the last 3 years. So when Gov. Deal's slick commercials say that he increased the

Negative ads air again in Georgia Senate race

A new batch of ads attacking both of the Senate Republican candidates are on the air, living up to predictions that the runoff will be heated and negative. Jack Kingston and David Perdue are under attack by separate ads that try to paint each as less conservative than the other. And both camps complain of deliberate distortions. The ad aimed at Perdue hammers on the theme of higher taxes. It says Perdue wants to raise them, including a sales tax on all online purchases, while Kingston “has never voted to raise our taxes. Never.” At the same time, Kingston is being hit with a spot attacking his career in Congress for spending “our tax dollars on thousands of wasteful earmarks, all while voting to raise his own pay seven times.” He also voted repeatedly with the House leadership in raising the debt ceiling. “Jack’s 22 years of liberal spending has to stop,” an announcer intones. The ad attacking Perdue is only airing on Atlanta television stations because Kingston

Rumor has it that downtown Main Street in Watkinsville is finally going to get repaired

Image
No longer shall trucks traveling through Main Street rattle the ceilings, walls, and floors of some downtown Watkinsville businesses if the State DOT someday does indeed repave Main Street, also known as Business Route 441. Hopefully this will help the parking on Main Street, the business to increase in our small town Mom and Pop shops, and more people to drive slower through Watkinsville. I would be in favor of extended rumble strips or any other traffic calming mechanism that could be engineered to get the trucks to slow down or avoid rumbling down Main Street during business hours especially. I know there are no real plans or money for a By-Pass from LAD Trucking on Barnett Shoals to the 441 By-Pass, but there should be. I think the Watkinsville Police Department do an outstanding job of directing traffic during First Fridays and parades and what not. Chief Lee O'Dillon and his crew have always done the most with very little resources. I know the city council approves
