From: "Bryan Long, Better Georgia" Date:01/29/2014 10:05 Subject: Unexpected. We don't know what you did as yesterday's winter storm approached, but we know exactly where the governor was. He sent a personally signed Tweet just to let us know. Instead of getting ready for the coming crisis, Gov. Nathan Deal went to a luncheon to celebrate Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. The Atlanta mayor picked up an award from a magazine -- and magazine headlines are important to this governor. That's right. Instead of preparing for the coming storm, Gov. Deal was focused on politics. Later in the evening, as it became clear that thousands of Georgians would be stuck in their cars overnight, Gov. Deal held a live press conference with Mayor Reed. "As you know, we have been confronted with an unexpected storm that has hit the metropolitan Atlanta area." Gov. Deal really called this winter storm &qu

Compression of GOP political calendar continues thru 2016 Presidential campaign

I think the Republicans have learned a lesson from the Democratic conventions on this one at least. Sincerely,  Dan Matthews Subject: CNN Breaking News The Republican National Committee gave near-unanimous approval Friday to a package of rules changes that would condense the 2016 presidential nominating calendar and move the party's national convention to June. The changes ensure that the June 2016 Republican convention will be the earliest convention in either party since 1948. The moves, crafted in private in recent months by a small group of party officials representing both the party's establishment and grassroots wings, are designed to help the party avoid the kind of protracted Republican infighting that dented GOP nominee Mitt Romney's general election appeal in 2012.

Cherry picked from Todd Rehm's GeorgiaPundit.com email today

The Georgia Craft Brewers Guild argues that proposed changes in a Senate bill to allow them greater latitude in business practices doesn't go far enough . Georgia is one of many states operating under a three-tiered system that requires producers, distributors, and retailers of alcoholic beverages to be separate companies. Legislation that would relax that regulatory structure for microbrewers stalled in the legislature last year. "Our biggest account is a bar that's within a mile away of our building, yet our distributor has to pick it up from our place, take it up to Atlanta, and bring it back to the bar," Knowles said. Limited legislation to allow the presciption by doctors of some medicines derived from marijuana has received the support of the Medical Association of Georgia . [State Rep. Allen] Peake called the news Monday of support from the Medical Association of Georgia a "game-changer." He said he heard a lot of misgivi

Like anyone who lives inside the city limits, I am concerned about our future, and what Robert Smith's graduate thesis from Notre Dame aims to do and how they go about doing it.  I think on its face the concept has many merits but does not address the plans already on the books for the future like the Chicken Express By Pass or the Board of Education moving to the Williams property. I think the concerns of residents along the Third Street/Mulberry Street should be heard before any plans are agreed on at this point. That said I was impressed by the presentation and everything offered. It was obvious that Mr. Smith did his homework. He fielded questions well and tried to appeal to all interests. He indicated that the Vaughan property could be included seamlessly in this vision. The new Watkinsville property purchase besides the Courthouse would seem to be on the inside looking out on this blueprint. Many Watkinsville council members and business ow
