Tony Howard, Elmer Buddy Christian honored as employees of the quarter by A/CC Police

  Today's Topic Summary EMPLOYEES OF THE QUARTER HONORED   Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin, Sr., announces the Police Department's employees of the first quarter (January-February-March) 2011 who were recently honored with a reception at police headquarters. Two sworn employees were honored. While growing up in Athens, SPO Tony Howard knew from a young age he wanted to help people. Later on, he made the decision to join law enforcement in the community he loved. His desires led him to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department where he became a model for Community Oriented Policing. His love for his fellow officers inspired him to join the Honor Guard, a unit dedicated to paying homage to our fallen brethren as well as other formal duties. On March 22, 2011, he was feloniously assaulted while trying to apprehend a fleeing fugitive. Athens 5 points besieged by barricaded suicidal frat boy Saturday, incident ends without damage

Saturday night Athens police were seen brandishing automatic weaponry in response to a barricaded potential suicide situation in an unknown fraternity house near the intersection of Lumpkin and Milledge in the area known as Five Points. Apparently the father of the distraught frat boy talked him out of taking his own life. Many area residents were concerned over the sight of police running around with automatic weapons drawn and the complete lack of coverage in the Athens media by mid afternoon Sunday.
