Oconee BOC applauded for attempting to restructure county government

The manner with which governments function is about as exciting to participate in sometimes as watching paint dry, but I always give massive props to those who spend their own hard earned time to volunteer above and beyond the call of duty to try to refine our processes to make them more participatory and less of a micro-managed oligarchy. The Oconee County Board of Commissioners has been an evolving beast as long as I have lived in the county, and will continue to change as our children come in to the forefront a decade plus down the road. The steps that Chuck Horton, Jim Luke, Margaret Hale and others are taking to try to restructure the load and communication process are greatly appreciated .

Oconee County's Farmer Market beside Eagle Tavern finally opening this Saturday

Image
This note just came from Karl Berg and the fine folks at the Oconee County Farmers Market beside Eagle Tavern on Main Street and Third Street in the heart of Watkinsville right across the street from the Courthouse.  I hope it stays dry and people buy early and often tomorrow at this season's kick-off of the Farmer's Market. Woven brightly, Daniel J. Matthews, Jr.     Good Morning, The Market is finally opening this Saturday!! We will have greens, sugar snap peas, herbs, shiitake mushrooms, grass fed beef, homemade soaps, cakes, pies, cookies, pork skins, boiled & fried peanuts and who knows what else... Hope to see you there!! Remember we will be set up behind and to the side of the Eagle Tavern! Karl   Karl Berg 706-215-7385 www.oconeefarmersmarket.org  and http://www.apvoc.com/

Jeff Dantzler's arrests may be the best thing that ever happened to him

THis has next to nothing to do with Oconee County with the possible exception of the location of his former office, but a former colleague of mine on the radio got popped today for four counts. Any one who has listened to 960 the Ref AM sports talk radio or heard the UGA Lady Dawgs or men's baseball team has surely heard the encyclopedic knowledge of one Jeff Dantzler. Jeff and I are pretty much diametrically opposed poltically, but today he was arrested on four counts including DUI. I hope he gets the help he needs following his incarceration. I work for a lawyer who could help him out if he does not having someone already representing him. This man is a great broadcaster and I hope this arrest serves as a wake-up call for him and his rock and roll lifestyle. I live a far from perfect life myself but long ago and far away I learned how and when not to drink. Now we will be without he dulcet tones on Lady Bulldog broadcasts as well as on Georgia baseball games and also on the after

Soccer State semifinal rescheduled for this evening

Severe thunderstorms last night prevented play between our beloved Oconee County Warriors soccer team and the West Hall team in a match to decide who advances to the title tilt . Come cheer on the Warriors at 7pm this evening as they have yet to allow a goal this post-season.

Teabaggers run amok again in Oconee County Saturday

Ted Nugent or Lynyrd Skynyrd probably won't be performing, but there is yet another attempt at raising anti-Obama fervor at an AthensTeaParty.com event in Oconee Veterans Park near Watkinsville this Saturday 1-3 pm. I wonder what these folks think about President Obama attempting to close loopholes in offshore investment havens to keep our money home here in the United States of America instead of in various islands with favorable tax rates. I am all for legal means of paying as little taxes as possible, but as usual it is those who cut corners to not pay taxes who hike the rates for the rest of us law abiding citizens.

Mitigation Resolution remains back in Oconee County

I applaud the Oconee County Board of Commissioners for keeping wetlands and streams BEING EXCHANGED FOR other wetlands and streams in Oconee County and not Greene County or elsewhere.  Thanks to Lee Becker for reporting this as quickly as he did. From: Lee Becker < lbbecker@mindspring.com > Date: Tue, May 5, 2009 at 9:38 PM Subject: Mitigation Resolution To: lbbecker@mindspring.com Dear Friends, The Oconee County Board of Commissioners tonight sent to the Land Use and Transportation Committee for review a proposed resolution that would encourage the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to require mitigation in Oconee County for damage to streams and wetlands in the county. The citizen committee was asked by the board to consider the draft resolution and report back on any recommended action. See the blog posting < http://www.oconeecounty.com/Government/BOC/CVI-Assessment-Mar2009.pdf > of April 21 for details of the resolution. Lee -- Lee Becker Blog: www.oconeecou

Oconee County Historical Society meeting reminder

The Oconee County Historical Society will have a meeting Monday. I urge you to attend to hear the letters read by Mary Ruth Moore from her ancestors about Scull Shoals. Hi,             Our next meeting will be Monday the 11 th and we have a special treat in store.  Mary Ruth Moore read some more of her ancestor's letters at the festival in Scull Shoals over the weekend, much to everyone's delight.  She has promised to share the same stories with us Monday.             John and Richard have been working on wording and other information on signs for Central School house and we hope to have a report on that discussion also. New meeting time/date for Oconee County Democratic Committee

Update on the movement of the meeting from Chairman Jonathan Veit: Just a reminder that the Oconee County Democratic Committee has changed the date of its regular monthly meeting to the third Thursday of the month, rather than the first Thursday of the month. This means that we will not meet on Thursday, May 7th, but will instead meet on Thursday, May 21st at 7 pm at the Oconee County Government Annex. I just didn't want there to be any confusion. Thanks! Jonathan Veit
