Premier League semifinals Friday at the Athens Academy Middle School gym

Image
Lowell Matthews dribbles the ball up the court at Oconee Practice Gym. Conner Hatch and Carson Pittard join him on the Athens Academy A-Team. Photos by Dan Matthews The 5th grade division of the Athens Premier League has been a fierce battle all this brief basketball season, and the post-season tournament has been no exception with that stiff competition continuing. The defending champion Athens Academy will play host to the top seed Malcolm Bridge with Coach Kevin Daniel and the confident star Jack Mangel 7:30 pm Friday on the Spartans home court at the Middle School gym. This will be a mammoth battle, a clash of the titans if you will. Athens Academy Coach Chris Pittard and most of this team including the lanky Alex Deltchev, Drew Byus, Connor Hatch, Taylor Boswell and speedy off guard Owen Roberts  scouted the Thunder of Malcolm Bridge Wednesday in their opening round 33-10 rout of an overmatched Prince Avenue squad at the main gymnasium inside Oconee County High School. Click here   OCAF Hosts History Lecture Sam Thomas to speak on Mitchell's Thunderbolts, Athens' Unique Civil War Militia   Monday, February 21, 7:00 PM at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation    A double-barreled cannon, the only known one of its kind, was designed by Mr. John Gilleland, a private in Mitchell's Thunderbolts. Sam Thomas' presentation about the Athens Home Guard unit known as Mitchell's Thunderbolts, will tell the spirited tale of a Civil War militia formed to protect the town, and in so doing, developed a persona that was part warrior, part Keystone Kops. In 1863, with Georgia being threatened by an invasion of Union troops, many communities began to form their own local guard units to protect the towns in the case of attack. These militia groups were known as Home Guards and were generally made up of men either

Watkinsville City Council sails thru brief agenda

City Council member Samantha Purcell and Mayor Joe Walter hoist the new Arbor Day flag. The city will give out free tree seedlings starting Monday. Photo by Dan Matthews The Watkinsville City Council approved the second local portrait photographer with Dwayne Allen with his Dwayne A. Photography studio at 16 N. Main Street, below the karate studio. This was the only appearance in an otherwise brief meeting.  Watkinsville was approved by the Arbor Day Foundation as Tree City USA and will give out free tree seedlings at the Watkinsville Community Center starting Monday. The plastic sacked tree sprouts are usually gone by Tuesday.  The city had the best SPLOST month so far in the relatively brief time the city has been participating in penny tax. The Mayor deduced that the holiday may have been responsible for the boost. The economy was discussed, text changes to the conditional uses and the definition of malt beverage were given public hearings.  Eagle Scout Dusty Schroeder will b

Premier League Championship Week commences at area gyms this week

Athens Academy's Parker Skiles hoists a three in Premier League action Monday. Photo by Dan Matthews Nothing makes me happier than seeing a kid who could barely play dribble at the beginning of the season be able to run a play to perfect despite not having come close to winning a game all year. Such was the case for the Athens Academy Green Machine team this year, and green they were as most of the team had never played organized basketball prior to this season under the tutelage of Coach Chris Pittard. Tonight they fought valiantly against Coach Shane Todd and his Prince Avenue team who knocked off the winless Athens Academy squad 22-14 at the Spartan Center in front of an enthusiastic throng of family and friends in the first game of the post-season championship tournament. Games will continue all this week at Athens Academy and Oconee County High School in games for kids from 3rd through 6th grades. This is no Rec League action, this is an AAU feeder league with fast breaks a

Boil water advisory issued for Watkinsville

The Oconee Enterprise > Latest Updates > Boil water advisory issued for Watkinsville

Notice about the water main break from Alan Theriault

URGENT IFORMATION!!! Please be advised that there was a water main break yesterday on 15 South near Athens First. Water was down for about 4 hours and was up again yesterday. Today, that line ruptured in another location relatively close to the one yesterday and because of the nature of this break, we will be forced to issue a “BOIL WATER” advisory for customers in the City of Watkinsville and points south . This is precautionary, and notifications are being made in the media, on the web and through the city. Years ago, the water line was installed laying across a sewer line, and today’s break caused a rupture in both. I will advise as more information becomes available. Alan Alan D. Theriault Administrative Officer Oconee County Board of Commissioners atheriault@oconee.ga.us (706) 769-5120
