School Board Chairman David Weeks Won't Seek Re-election

This was what Chef Richard Miley of the Watkinsville restaurant Chops and Hops attempting to get in my way with this evening at Barberitos as I enjoyed their new mango salsa. I only wish Miley had done so about a minute and a half later so that Barberitos owner and BOE chair David Weeks could have flattened him with a block to his chest. I was merely trying to enjoy my dinner with my son when this co-owner of the restaurant down the way in Town Center decided to try a little fancy footwork with me. Lucky for him I spied my friends and talked to them in line instead. I probably should have called the Watkinsville Police on him, but they have more important things to do than to clean up the mess of restaurant wars. I know Miley is a former Marine and probably could mop the floor with me, but I do not wish them violence such as that which was talked about in their infamous black and bleu burger about six weeks back. Most all of us are motivated by wanting to leave a positive impact as our legacy. I know last night I had to console a very sad 12-year-old basketball player who was equally disappointed that his team lost by missing a last second shot and his lack of playing time to make an impact on the outcome. I write this not to reflect poorly on his coach or teammates, but to reflect on the passing of Whitney Houston and wondering what we will all be remembered by when we pass. That is the one thing we unquestionably have in common no matter what our believes or faith. But let us strive to understand and appreciate our differences as something to celebrate rather than discriminate. Watkinsville diners will soon have another choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Town Center. Normally this would not make me bat an eye, but biking past local restauranteur and former UGA football coach Ray Goff coming out of Mirko's Pasta, I saw a "coming soon Subway" banner adorning the middle section where the clothing store used to be. Once upon a time there was a Quizno's where Mirko's is, so things have changed in this downtown space before. I would well imagine Mike Thornton is behind this one as well, but I do not know that. There are some Oconee County diners who will surely be happy to have a choice out of the David Weeks continuum of Mirko's and Barberitos and not wanting to take their family to Chops and Hops. There are others who dread the continued encroachment of a national chain and would rather keep Watkinsville weird (to paraphrase a slogan swiped from Austin and fitting for Athens). The Oconee County Board of Commissioners are to be commended for at least realizing the status quo of getting things done behind closed doors is no longer acceptable . It is just a little late to regain a lot of the public's trust on this or any other issue. So the Board of Education's David Weeks is turning the old Shishkabobby's in Town Center location into a Barberitos? Now there's a stretch. It was already built like one, and the food tasted like one, so I guess he hopes families will come buy beans and gas from him. Time for former Oconee County High School principal Mark Channell to be let go by the Central Office of the Oconee County Board of Education in the wake of the Brian Dickens sex scandal while at the head of the softball team. There needs to be a sacrificial lamb in this case before the public is satisfied.

The Oconee Enterprise website sent out an email Friday announcing the closing of the Shishka-bobby's restaurant in downtown Watkinsville in the Town Center development in a story well written by Blake Giles. While I do not take pleasure the economic hardship of others, this restaurant never had "it" and was doomed from the start, It was Barberitos not on a stick, and it did not garner much of a following. Weeks recent problems with the suggestion of the school board wanting a raise probably did not help keep his restaurant open any longer, as commenters in the Athens Banner-Herald's onlineathens.com had his restaurant right in the crosshairs. I hope Weeks new theme is more family focused and a place where you want to come back to again and again. I do not pretend to have the perfect solution for this restaurant lacks or needs. Go vote today if you live in Oconee County for the SPLOST referendum (essentially another penny on every dollar of purchases in Oconee to help our towns and projects through the unincorporated areas as well) or especially if you are a resident of the municipality of Bogart (which stretches into a tiny portion of Clarke as well) where there is a race between two candidates to replace Mayor Terri Glenn. Those candidates are Janet Jones and Michael Ward and I salute them both for having the nerve to serve as an elected official, a thankless task if there every was one. Just ask David Weeks . Although the last time I peered through the window and door of the former Gautreau's Restaurant location it looked weeks from being open, I eagerly anticipate the opening of the new Shishkabobby's Grille restaurant in my neighborhood where my son and I can go eat and enjoy our selection. I would imagine this will be one of those places where you can order your skewer with whatever meat or vegetable you want to and either watch it prepared or maybe even cook it at your table (although that would probably make the insurance bills skyrocket). Whatever the verdict, you can attend this week's Watkinsville City Council meeting and watch owner David Weeks, yes the same of the head of the Board of Education and owner of a Barberitos here in the county, come get his license for a new restaurant in town.
