Dr . Roy Thurman Ward , known for his peacocks on Main Street, watercolors, photography, print making, sculptures, and his Japanese art collections among many other things, passed at age 92 Wednesday. His services will be at 2 pm Saturday, April 11 at Lord & Stephens funeral home on Jimmy Daniell Road. Part of his Watkinsville property was recently acquired for the Watkinsville Woods park the City has been working on for some time to turn into a walking tree-clad series of paths for the community.

I have been receiving very effective telephone calls from the National Rifle Association with a 703 area code number with a live person sometimes on the line asking to speak to patriotic Georgians and to continue listening for a pre-recorded message from lead douchebag Wayne LaPierre that was more slanted than a roof of a steep A-frame. Being the patriotic Georgian I am, I listened to his screed against Congress and a new bill that will make people have to take a test to get their magazines to refill their automatic weapons. These are not the kind of magazines you would get a subscription to, but instead the kind you would put in the end of a repeating rifle. After hearing his argument which was full of more holes than Swiss cheese, I was then connected to a man who asked me if I trust Congress with my Second Amendment rights, and to quote John Doe from X in the song "More Fun in the New World" - I said Yes because I did. Burnell Brown was an activist in Oconee County long before I was even alive . Mr. Brown was in many ways one of the few remaining African-American activists with a one generation removed from slaves. He was much older than Oconee County itself. His parents were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. He saw it all in Watkinsville during our lifetime, from segregation to lynchings to mass murders at the city jail to eventual desegregation and integration of our public and private school. He told me stories of a currently elected Republican official offering him a bribe for "his people's votes." I am sure both Rich Rusk and Bill Yarbrough will be at his 1 pm memorial service tomorrow at Bethel Baptist Church in Watkinsville. I was honored to introduce Mr. Brown to Lt. Governor Mark Taylor at OCAF a few years ago. Please attend his memorial service tomorrow if you can.

I agree with the U.S. Army decision to give the late soldier from Watkinsville a raise after his death and funeral . That will provide his family and new born son a little more financial security in the forthcoming years. We saw the supporters and those kooks from the church in Kansas near the burial grounds on Atlanta Highway early Saturday afternoon. There were lots of flags near Barnes and Noble and motorcycles and police escorts, etc. Military funerals are an interesting ritual that everyone should see at least once no matter what you views about the war. I hope his death is not in vain.
