Medlock side of the family comments on my dad Dan Matthews, Sr. died Monday

Image
From: Wade Medlock ; medlock107@comcast.net Cousins Wade and Eden have lengthy Atlanta media histories Subject: Re: Dan Matthews died Monday Thank you for the notice, Eden.  I'm sure all the Medlocks extend their thoughts and prayers to Evanlee, Dan, Sarah and Emily.  We'll watch for the obit next Sunday. Archibald Daniel Johnson Matthews , born February 14, 1930, was the first child of Antoinette Mary Medlock Johnson Matthews, known affectionately as "Auntie" and "Maidee."  Antoinette was the 3rd and youngest child of William Parks Medlock and Vilenah Antoinette Mason Medlock. Dan came to the Medlock reunions several times recently, but was too ill to make it this year.  We were glad, however, to see his wife, Evanlee, and cousin Jean Johnson Givens at the 2010 reunion and we wish Evanlee a speedy recovery. Business Bureau Studies Cover Entire Southeast By Dan Matthews, Sr. Friday, November 2, 1951 Although occupying ouly one small room in the Commerce-Journalism Building, the bureau of business research is carrying on a program of study projects which cover the entire southeast. The bureau, founded in 1928 by Dr. R. P. Brooks, is headed by Dr. J. Whitney Bunting, newcomer to the University this fall after a year at the Atlanta division. With seven regular assistants, he supervises the far-flung operations of the pint-sized organization. Besides compiling and analyzing statistics on various types of business from over the state, the group publishes two monthly bulletins. The most important, with a circulation of 3,000 is Georgia Business, a public service monthly devoted to comment on the economic situation. This magazine features charts, government comment and staff articles each issue. The other publication is a single-page bulletin sent to all interested persons; it lists

January 11, 1952 Red and Black newspaper editorial written by my father

The Red and Black newspaper News Editor Dan Matthews, Sr. page 4 editorial January 11, 1952 Crowing or Clucking The legislature cock is commencing to crow. As the representatives empty into Atlanta from 159 sources and start falling to one side of the fence or another, the chanticleer perches firmly in the center of the top rail and voices his harsh welcome. The old bird seems to herald the dawn of a bright and progressive morning. Bills are floating through the smoky rooms toward the hopper with features to bear him out. Legislation on highways, tax-repeal, schools, pensions and other universally popular subjects all seem bound to come to pass. Yet- like Reynard speaking up on the ruler of the roost, a foul being is in our midst. Like a fetid fertilizer beneath a beautiful bloom, there is a subtle distastefulness present. It is a pair of Senate bills, now awaiting House action. One to Institute suits against contracts and agreements made since 1945—particularly those

Daniel Johnson Matthews, Senior died on his beloved Druid Hills, Georgia hilltop after a fine life indeed a few hours earlier this evening with his eldest daughter Sarah at this hand. He was the son of William Collins Matthews and Antionette Johnson Matthews, born in 1930 in Atlanta with a railroading father and nursery school teaching mother. She started what many considered the first private nursery school in Atlanta with the Out of Doors School with "Miss Annette" teaching a large portion of young Atlanta Jewish children of that era. Matthews was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines, Iowa and has many Johnson-Harris reunions at Rock Spring Presbyterian in Atlanta. He worked for many years with Meredith Corporation out of Des Moines, Iowa but had returned to Atlanta in 1985. Matthews represented Lewis Grizzard for other newspapers than the AJC as a syndicator for that newspaper columnist and other content for the Des Moines Register syndicate after lea
