Guts

Friend -- "This is a threat to our democracy...And if we just stand by and allow the special interests to silence anybody who's got the guts to stand up to them, our country's going to be a very different place." That's what the President just said about the Chamber of Commerce, a right-wing group spending $75 million to beat Democrats this fall, and reportedly taking money from foreign corporations -- some even owned by foreign governments. These groups are trying to buy our elections, backing candidates who want to tear down everything that makes the middle class strong in this country: things like Medicare, Social Security, even the minimum wage. Donations are pouring in from the President's and First Lady's notes this week, but we all need to do what we can to stop this threat to our democracy. Will you chip in $3 right now? Your gift will be matched by a fellow supporter who is just as dedicated as you are. There's no cavalry to h

From now until November, I need you in the game

Friend -- I come into this election with clear eyes. I am proud of all we have achieved together, but I am mindful of all that remains to be done. I know some out there are frustrated by the pace of our progress. I want you to know I'm frustrated, too. But with so much riding on the outcome of this election, I need everyone to get in this game. Neither one of us is here because we thought it would be easy. Making change is hard. It's what we've said from the beginning. And we've got the lumps to show for it. The fight this fall is as critical as any this movement has taken on together. And if we are serious about change, we need to fight as hard as we ever have. The very special interests who have stood in the way of change at every turn want to put their conservative allies in control of Congress. And they're doing it with the help of billionaires and corporate special interests underwriting shadowy campaign ads. If they succeed, they will not stop

South Georgia is about to get reamed by the supposed GOP onslaught

I live in North Georgia. I am obviously a Democratic party supporter. However, I do not want one party or one region of the state to dominate our State's infrastructure. Get out the vote Macon, Albany, Tifton, Cordele, Columbus, Waycross, Valdosta, Moultrie and Dublin, or it is the end of any direct influence on Georgia's governmental policy. I think Savannah and Dublin would remain relatively Democratic, but North Georgia residents need to realize that power concentrated up yonder is not a good thing for them either. Friend -- I've always said that 2008 was an amazing journey. But nothing from that election struck me more than seeing so many giving their time and lending their voices because they were ready for change. Two years ago, in state after state -- no matter where I went -- I saw grandmothers out canvassing, college kids traveling to swing states and sleeping on gymnasium floors, and people using their lunch breaks to make a few more calls. So many got involved for the very first time, each one bringing others along with them. It was inspiring to witness. Now, Barack and I need you to help show that energy again. Because this is such a critical moment, a group of grassroots donors are ready to match any contribution you can give. Across the country, teachers and firefighters, truckers and nurses have made pledges of support hoping to inspire you to take the next step. Because of them, a $3 contribution will become $6. Dr. David Jarrett mounts late symbolic write-in campaign against Bill Cowsert in State Senate 46th District

Image
"Members of the Clarke County Democrats are supporting my write in campaign for the 46th State Senate district. Tell your friends to write me in as a protest against Republican misrule of the State," said Dr. David Jarrett on his Facebook page Sunday. He will be running against three term incumbent Republican Bill Cowsert. Whether this is strictly symbolic or will actually count for something depends on whether or not Dr. Jarrett registered his write-in candidacy with the Secretary of State's office by the deadline in June I believe.  A check of the Secretary of State's website Sunday indicated no opposition for Cowsert, so any votes for Jarrett will not be counted.  Jarrett subsequently indicated that he had not officially registered his write-in candidacy with any official election officers at either the state or local level by the deadline Dr. Jarrett is a practicing psychiatrist and addiction counselor in Athens-Clarke County.
