Debate will proceed with McCain, Obama tonight

CNN is reporting as of 11:30 AM that Republican nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona will stop his grandstanding shenanigans and appear in Mississippi this evening for the first Presidential debate against Democratic party nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois. The debate commences at 9 pm Eastern time.

Debunk McCain's debate exit strategy

Subject: Tell McCain and Obama: We need a real debate on the economy. Dear Friend, John McCain thinks we don't need a presidential debate on Friday night. We disagree. We need a real debate on the economy, and we need it now. The presidential candidates should hold their debate Friday as scheduled, and address the proposed $700 billion Wall Street bailout. We've been hearing a lot this week about how our economy is in a crisis - maybe the worst crisis since the Great Depression. Politicians on the left and the right have made all kinds of claims about exactly how much or little we should panic and what that means for the policies we should enact. We reject the notion that canceling the debate is the best way to focus on the economy. We have a monumental decision to make this November, and we deserve a robust conversation on the defining issues of our time. I just signed a petition calling on Senators McCain and Obama to debate economic issues this Friday -- I hope you will too.

Tonight at the Taco Stand

I could somehow not remember Scott Howard's last name while telling manager and good buddy Mark Marchand behind the counter about Larry Munson retiring (the guy behind in line with the son looking eerily like Mark's eight year old Jalen reminded me). But I got my usual two Tilapia tacos to go and on the way out, after a long line had surfaced, a much littler boy who has just been playing soccer was instead blowing in and out of a just small enough plastic bags covering just a little too much of his face for most folks comfort, seems I was only one checking him out at the critical juncture. Mom was at the front of the line maybe 15 feet away blindsided by the line of people oddly behind her (usually the line snakes to the left side). So in a split second I decided I was justified on raining on this maybe six year old's parade and used my scariest grown up voice to very sternly and loudly yanked the plastic sack away and say NO, fully looking for his mom. She mouthed thank y

Closed for Business? Keep Our Parks & Wildlife Areas Open

Hi! I just sent a message encouraging the Governor to oppose proposed budget cuts to Georgia's Department of Natural Resources Budget. You can do the same by going to http://www.protectgeorgia.net/.                 Closed for Business? Keep Our Parks & Wildlife Areas Open Dear Friend, Facing a difficult budget, elected officials are once again proposing drastic cuts to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Valuable state parks and historic sites, expansive wildlife management areas, clean air, clean water, and a productive coast play a vital role in promoting the health and economic well-being of our state. Strong public opposition to any proposed budget cuts is needed in order to keep Georgia's natural assets healthy and accessible to the publ

Epps Bridge Centre Wetlands Destruction

As has been his supreme gift to our community in terms of letting us know of our environment being pillaged by developers here in Oconee County, Lee Becker once again sets the facts straight ignored by the mainstream media. Here we will surely get what we do not need: more cars, more traffic, more pollution, more destruction of our wetlands all in the name of a few more stores. The Board of Commissioners can do correctly here and insist on wetland mitigation here in Oconee and not in Greene as a condition for this latest commercial over development. Dear Friends, The developer planning to build the $76 million shopping center on Epps Bridge Parkway expects to mitigate the damage to wetlands and streams on that site by restoring streams and wetlands in Greene County, but at least two options now exist for mitigation here in Oconee County. The Georgia Land Trust Service Center in Athens has been authorized to accept fees to compensate for the damage to streams and wetlands on development
