Keep Our Parks & Wildlife Areas Open

Dear Friend,

Facing a difficult budget, elected officials are once again proposing drastic cuts to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Valuable state parks and historic sites, expansive wildlife management areas, clean air, clean water, and a productive coast play a vital role in promoting the health and economic well-being of our state. Strong public opposition to any proposed budget cuts is needed in order to keep Georgia's natural assets healthy and accessible to the public. State parks, historic sites, and wildlife management areas need to stay open and laws need to be enforced.

Problem:

Time and again, funding for Georgia DNR has been cut to meet short-term budget needs. After decades of such cuts, our Department has deteriorated to the point where basic services like bathrooms and water fountains at state parks and historic sites are inoperable, erosion and sedimentation laws are not enforced, fish and wildlife populations are minimally monitored and understood, and environmental permits are poorly analyzed before they are granted.
In the coming weeks, your elected officials will be deciding whether to shut down and padlock off up to 13 of our state’s greatest treasures in response to budget needs. They will be eliminating ‘trust’ funds collected to enforce environmental laws, and redirecting the monies to other purposes. They will be cutting biologists’ resources past the bone, into the marrow. This short-sighted act would deny Georgia residents access to some of our most treasured and valued lands, and further place highly valuable public-trust assets in jeopardy. This is not a matter of policy – it is a matter of money and priorities.
Solution:
Your elected officials need to know that Georgia DNR’s budget should be off-limits. Time is of the essence - the General Assembly is holding its first budget hearing this week.

Contact the Governor today and urge him to reject these ill-conceived cuts to our public land, air, and water assets.

Action Needed:
Send a message to Governor Perdue today urging him to reject these ill-conceived cuts to Georgia DNR's budget.
You will be required to fill out a contact form on the Governor's website.

Deadline for responding: Please take action by Friday, September 26, 2008.
