The Nongame Conservation Section of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is offering a $1,000 grant to a third-, fourth- or fifth-grade public or private school teacher in Georgia who demonstrates exceptional energy and innovation in teaching life sciences. This opportunity is possible thanks to support from The Environmental Resource Network , or TERN, friends group of the Nongame Conservation Section. Through education, research and management, the Nongame Conservation Section works to safeguard Georgia’s native diversity of wild animals, plants and their habitats – while also striving to increase public enjoyment of the outdoors. More surgery planned for EMT injured in Oconee County ambulance wreck By Joe Johnson An EMT severely injured Saturday when her ambulance wrecked while responding to a call in Oconee County is expected to undergo another round of surgery today. Kayla Smith had surgery to repair extensive leg and arm injuries following the wreck and more surgery is scheduled, according to Don Cargile, community relations director for National EMS. Smith was a passenger in the ambulance at the time it was struck by another vehicle on U.S. Highway 441 near Highway 186. The ambulance overturned and after a long extraction operation by rescue personnel she was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center. The driver of the ambulance was treated and released, Cargile said. The driver of the vehicle that struck the ambulance was not believed to have been charged, according to Cargile. He said the wreck was being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol and a report should be released
