Watkinville losing Plum Creek business

Nichols Land Development Co. has snared two anchor tenants for a spec building outside Athens, which means the building will open later this year at least 55% leased. Athens-based law firm Fortson, Bentley & Griffin has leased a full floor (23,000 square feet) in the three-story, 70,000-square-foot Building 200 in the University Parkway & Technology Park in Oconee County. The firm is moving from downtown Athens. Joining Fortson, Bentley at the building is Plum Creek, one of the country’s largest timberland owners. Plum Creek has leased 16,759 square feet in the building for its regional office, which will be moving from downtown Watkinsville

Charlie Hoag: my hero

The following is a quote from a comment a story buried in the distant past of this blog: Here is the answer to what you are wondering. I am C. Hoag. The current issues within and surrounding the Oconee political scene and the players involved are a direct result of the backdoor, jellyfish, no cahones politics that were set in motion against me years ago. I have never publically spoken out on those events so here goes. I put my name in the hat, jeopardized a 15 year career and my family because no one else would. As soon as the developers in the county saw me at Harris Shoals Park the poop went knee deep and cell phones went into overdrive. I was not, would not be and am not in their pockets and they knew this. They took action. They never once contacted me prior to having my name removed by the State Party. They handled a threat by sweeping it away. So those involved are now reaping the consequences of their actions. Not by any actions that I have taken, but by the fact that unethical

Volunteers needed for April 8th bike ride

The next Oconee Democratic Committee meeting will be 8 pm Thursday, April 6 devoted to planning the Bike Ride the following Saturday. Some of these are already in motion, some need doing before then, and we need some big vans to help with the SAG duties. 1) Legal and permits: We need to file a permit/application along with a $40 fee, and appear at the March BOC meeting prepared to answer questions. This permit needs to be done asap so that we can get on the March BOC agenda. 2) Marketing: Once the ride is approved, we need to send press releases to newspapers in Oconee and surrounding counties. We also need to contact Dem Committees in surrounding counties, state dems, and relevant bike clubs, shops, and event lists. (I will be glad to do this.) 3) Sponsors: If we want sponsors, we need to find them. 4) Facilities: We will need to clear with Gina Lindsay that we can use the Court House Parking lot as a gathering place for the ride. Also, we need to contact Henry Hibbs about using

Matthews, Jr. Correspondent Watkinsville will be enjoying drive-through java sometime this spring or early summer as Jittery Joes Coffee was approved for both a business license and building permit for their upscale high profile location at 27 Greensboro Highway in the former sporting goods and convenience store location. Computer expert Kerry King came before the Watkinsville City Council with developer Norm Grayson to seek approval for coffee franchise purchased from Bob Gooch of Athens. King said the new location would resemble their most recent location on Baxter Street more than the older version at Five Points. King plans to hang a banner stating “Jittery Joes welcomes you to Downtown Watkinsville” on the front of the building at the intersection of State Highways 15 and the business route 441/129. Mayor Jim Luken asked King to conside

Berry stench starting to rise in shooting death of 9-year-old

At least now the facts are starting to come out about the ridiculous statements Sheriff Scott Berry said ("boys will be boys") about the death of a 9 year old Oconee County boy at the hand of his borther. Sounds like the dad is not a very good role model to be keeping guns unlocked around the house. The armour is tarnished on the badge of the Sheriff in Oconee COunty, and people are talking about it quite a lot.
