Deal in works for purchase of 19th-century Watkinsville house

A retired educator who has spent years renovating and living in older homes is working out a deal to purchase and restore an 1800s Watkinsville home that at one time might have been sold piecemeal as architectural salvage. James Carter, whose previous restoration projects included a former Presbyterian minister’s home in downtown Athens and a residence on Athens’ Hill Street — in addition to the 1800s Oglethorpe County home where he resides — is awaiting an upcoming Watkinsville City Council vote on a needed rezoning before he closes a purchase deal with Watkinsville  Deal in works for purchase of 19th-century Watkinsville house

Oconee County voters really need to elect Dr. Penny Mills to the Board of Commissioners

Image
Dr. Mills addressing the Oconee County Democratic Committee. If you do not vote in any other race locally in the May 24 GOP Primary, make sure you do and to vote for Dr. Penny Mills in the Post 1 race against resigned Board of Education member Mark Thomas. This is race pits old school Oconee County good ol' boys and their brethren in Thomas versus a well educated woman who has been on the Oconee County Planning Commission and worked for Gainesville State University in Dr. Penny Mills. I worked under Dr. Mills' leadership while managing the bookstore at Gainesville State College a few years back. She is very communicative and always willing to listen to and answer your questions.

Meetings Thusday on Bishop bypass, sewer line in Oconee County

The Georgia Department of Transportation and a group appointed to work with them on a bypass around Bishop have scheduled a public meeting on the proposed project this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Following that meeting, in the same meeting room in the Oconee County Library, the Friends of Call Creek scheduled a meeting to discuss the status of a planned sewer pipeline that would follow Calls Creek to the point where the creek joins the Middle Oconee River. Both the bypass plan and the sewer pipeline project are controversial in Oconee County. The agenda for the Bishop bypass meeting includes a brief recap of an earlier meeting in December; what’s happened in the months following; the GDOT’s work plan for the rest of this year; and a rough timeline for the project, highlighting key project milestones. Also under discussion is the effect of Senate Bill 346, approved by the Georgia legislature this year, which exempts GDOT from having to comply with most state environmenta

Honorable Heritage: A Book of Family Folklore: Billy Boyd Lavender: 9 am to Noon book signing at Oconee State Bank 4/30/16

Billy Boyd Lavender will hold a book-signing of 'Honorable Heritage' at the main branch of Oconee State Bank in downtown Watkinsville on April 30, 2016 from 9AM till Noon .  I plan to have candy and balloons for the kiddies.  WMSL 88.9 will announce this event all this week.     Most families have their share of stories and folklore. In the case of author Billy Boyd Lavender, one of the most intriguing of these stories revolves around a murder mystery from 1905-the deaths of two of his ancestors and the mob lynching that soon followed those deaths. Told from information provided by Lavender's mother, Ruby Neal Hardigree Lavender, and with support from historical documentation, Honorable Heritage recalls events that occurred on a forty-one-acre tract of land in Watkinsville, Georgia, that would become the farm where Lavender grew up. There, his great-great-grandparents were murdered in the course of a robbery. In response, the premature actions of a mob mud
