From: psommer Date:05/21/2014 9:19 AM (GMT-05:00) Subject: a historical program of interest "Charged with Treason: The Ordeal of the Roswell Mill Workers" will be the title of a program by Phillip Whiteman at the meeting of the Brig. Gen. T.R.R. Cobb Camp No. 97 Sons of Confederate Veterans Thursday June 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Watkinsville Community Center VFW  Drive.   In July 1864, during the Federal march on Atlanta, Union troops entered the town of Roswell and burned three textile mills.  Under explicit orders from Gen. W. T. Sherman about 400 civilian mill workers, mostly women and children, were abducted and transported to Marietta; from there they were transported north and the fate of most of them remains unknown.  Whiteman is the Park Historian for the Kennesaw National Battlefield.

Sent: Monday, February 13, 2012 9:24 PM Subject: meeting february 20 Dr. Betty Ann Brooks, local resident and author, will speak to the Oconee Historical Society at their meeting on Feb 20th, 7pm at OCAF.   Her recently published book, From Riverboats to Confederate Navy to Knighthood, will be discussed. The book chronicles Dr. Brooks' family history leading up to the Civil War and especially the riverboat captain, William Param Brooks, her grandfather.  Dr. Brooks can tell as good a story as she can write one so join us as we travel from New Orleans to Cuba , England and the return to the South.   The meeting will be at OCAF February 20 th at 7pm.  There was a recent article about Dr. Brooks and her book in the Oconee Leader, if you are interested in learning more about this interesting lady.  Peggy

Subject: cemetery tour Just wanted to let you all know about a cemetery tour some of the Reverend John Andrew, NSDAR Historical Preservation Committee ladies are giving at the Watkinsville   City   Cemetery   next Monday the 13th at 9:30am.  If you are curious and would like to know more about the cemetery or catch up on our chapter's committee work there please stop in..everyone is most welcome. The tour should last about and hour and a half.  We have invited the local SAR fellas, our DAR chapter ladies, the Oconee Historical Society, the Garden Club ladies and a few of our Oconee Library ladies.
