Not backing down

Image
Friend -- Last week, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell got all 41 GOP senators to promise to oppose Wall Street reform. He thought President Obama would back down in the face of a unified show of force. He was wrong. Instead, the President stood in front of Wall Street bankers Thursday, going to bat for consumers and confronting the toughest of crowds with a strong message: Reform is good for Americans, good for the market, and it's time to get on board. Bipartisan discussions have begun again -- but Wall Street lobbyists are still swarming Capitol Hill, trying to trip up negotiations and maintain the gridlock that has defined Washington for far too long. So now, it's up to us. We need to show Senate Republicans that the American people are watching closely to see whose side they end up on. Tell Sen. McConnell: Stop standing in the way of desperately needed change to win favor with your Wall Street allies. The President laid out a bold p

Senate debate just days away -- will we be ready?

Image
Friend -- The debate on Wall Street reform is just days away in the Senate, and right-wing outlets and bank allies are starting to escalate their attacks. The days ahead are critical if we're going to fight back and win. GOP leaders in the Senate bragged last week that they can do exactly what the big banks have asked them to do: prevent the bill from even coming to a vote. The truth is, unless we move fast, this strategy could actually work -- and the strongest consumer protections ever proposed could be put on the backburner. The House has already passed legislation. We still have enough time to beat the big banks' insider arm-twisting and win enough support to pass a bill through the Senate. But only if we're willing to kick our grassroots efforts into high gear, right now. Please donate $5 or more to help us host more events, talk to more voters, and expand our rapid response efforts to get Wall Street reform to a vote. The status quo is not an option.

Two places to peform Earth Day waterway clean-ups in Oconee County Saturday

There are two wonderful wet choices to enjoy and practically apply Earth Day in Oconee County with good weather Saturday morning as far as cleaning up waterways this weekend: Harris Shoals Park has a creek in the middle where they are going to start then fan out, and it is in the heart of Watkinsville on Experiment Station Road which is also State Route 53 right off Main Street. For the more serious water trash cleaner wanting something a little more heavy duty and hardcore, meet on US 78 at the Walton County line near the Bridge where on the Oconee River the other clean-up will be. Oconee County remains the least unemployed county in the state of Georgia

This article from the Morgan County Citizen newspaper somewhat dismissively allows that Oconee County's lowest-in-the-state unemployment rate is a due in part to our proximity to the University of Georgia. There is some truth to that assessment. County’s unemployment rate drops .03 of a percent | Morgan County Citizen Online Posted using ShareThis

Town Of North High Shoals March 2010 Meeting Notes from Fred
