President Obama's health care reform is under attack here in Oconee County with a rally at the Oconee Veterans Park August 29. This is a good start to try and find a way to counter their lies hall over Northeast Georgia as well. Please attend this meeting if you can. I am glad we are starting to get the information out about health care. We need better stunts than Dr. Broun our clown of a Congressman has pulled off recently. Woven brightly, Daniel J. Movie Night with Local Democrats

Image
My mother was once responsible for securing Hunter S. Thompson from the Des Moines Airport during the winter of 1971. She was the co-chair for the McGovern campaign. We were in the midst of a horrible Iowa blizzard, and my mom was searching for him numerous times during the afternoon and evening. His flight had come in late on a Sunday and no one could find him in the airport. We finally did find him passed out packing heat in an "unknown" bar upstairs in the airport. Unbeknowst to us, he had "opened" a bar with his pistol holding a terrified barkeep hostage until he was served enough of his favorite antifreeze. Woven brightly, Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. Hello! The Oconee Democrats have planned another of our popular Movie Nights -- for this coming Monday -- to see a new documentary about Hunter S. Thompson. Join us -- or you can watch the Republican convention on TV that night instead! Hope to see you! Pat Priest Mem...

Invitation to the Saxon Campaign Kick Off

Campaign kick-off will be 7-10 pm Monday, June 23, 2008 at Athens Cine' theater on 234 W. Hancock Avenue. Suggested donations are $100.00 with reservations at saxonrsvp@gmail.com or call 706-549-2862 or stop by their HQ at Broad and Milledge Avenue on the opposite corner from the Varsity in a beautiful white house. Perhaps this will assuage some of his former employees and critics about his fund raising ability.

Oconee Democrats take you to the Moon at the movies

Come see the film "In the Shadown of the Moon" Monday As for the movie -- we've hastily put this together because we thought this stirring documentary would be especially heartening in these depressing times of war, torture and drought. In the Shadow of the Moon is about the dogged scientists and courageous astronauts who reached the moon. Join Oconee County Democrats and others from around the region to see a fine movie, discuss the film and other matters with new and old friends, and support Ciné. We'll meet inside around 7; the movie starts at 7:15. Please forward this to your friends! Hope to see you! Pat Priest --------- IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON http://www.intheshadowofthemoon.com/ [ UK 2006, 35mm, 100min, Dir: Duncan Copp ] Winner: 2007 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award The excitement, majesty and extraordinary human accomplishment of the American lunar program of the '60s and early '70s is rousingly captured in IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON, a new docu...

Books and a movie

We're on for another movie night! Come join other Democrats from Oconee and Clarke County as we get together to see and discuss the film "A Crude Awakening" this Wednesday, October 17th, at 7:15 at Ciné in Athens. This 2006 Swiss movie about dwindling oil stocks has been described as "compelling, intelligent, and highly entertaining." Meet at 7 inside the theater, located at 234 W. Hancock. Our movie nights are a good opportunity to see thought-provoking movies, meet new friends, and support our fine arthouse cinema! Our monthly book group also meets this week -- on Thursday at 6:30 at Five Points Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway. We'll be discussing Thomas Frank's "What's the Matter with Kansas?" a book one writer described as "the true story of how conservatives punk'd a nation." Hope to see you!
