Incident report: Evans tried to bargain his way out of DUI arrest  | ajc.com

I am a huge Damon Evans supporter, but I cannot see him holding on to his job after the latest revelations in this article. I worked in the Athletic Association in 1994 when he cam from Graduate School at the University of Missouri. I thought he would be a great Athletic Director, and he was, but I do not see how he can hold on to his job now. The PR nightmare is only going to get worse when the videotape comes out next. Decisive action is called for, and swiftly. Incident report: Evans tried to bargain his way out of DUI arrest | ajc.com

On to the Senate

Friend -- Last night, just before 7 p.m. Eastern Time, the House passed Wall Street reform by a vote of 237 to 192. This is a huge victory for our movement -- and all American consumers. Now, there's just one hurdle left before this historic bill can be signed into law. It must be passed by the Senate -- a vote likely to come right after the July 4th congressional recess. Protecting consumers and holding the big banks accountable is a key piece of the change that all of us fought for in 2008. It's up to us to bring it across the finish line -- making sure every champion in the Senate knows that we're standing with them, and that those in opposition know that Americans are demanding reform. Can you take a moment now to write to your senators? http://my.barackobama.com/WSRSenateVote Thanks for making it possible, Mitch Mitch Stewart Director Organizing for America P.S. -- A lot of OFA supporters have been passing around this clip from Rachel Maddow

Oconee County Observations: Oconee County Republican Candidates Not All Pure Republicans, Voting History Shows

Republicans in Oconee County are in fashion, are trendy, and are the favorite brand of soap of most voters. It is as if the country club of choice if the G.O.P. in Oconee County, and the fact remains that the Republicans remain a 2-to-1 majority locally and it is damn near impossible for a Democrat to be elected locally in this day and age. Purity and adherence to some supposed orthodoxy are not a very good indicator of how genuine a candidate is in my humble opinion. In this day of teabagging, the Republican party's big tent has become smaller and more exclusive to relatively wealthy white people, while the Democratic party has rebounded in the once Republican strongholds of Cobb and Gwinnett counties in Georgia. The fact that some candidates have voted for Democrats in the recent past should actually bring more votes to some candidates, but some local voters claim a purity test of how much a conservative Republican are they. A gauge of how meaningless party labels are would be

Get it to the President

Image
Friend -- Congress is expected to cast its final votes on historic Wall Street reform as soon as today. So much has happened in the past year that it's easy to forget how much OFA supporters have done to get to this point. In key districts around the country, we organized to win a 223-202 vote in the House last December. OFA supporters poured in nearly tens of thousands of calls to Capitol Hill offices the day before last month's vote to get it through the Senate. This is your bill -- the strongest and boldest overhaul of the financial system since the aftermath of the Great Depression. It's the change we fought the big banks to make -- and we've almost won. What happens before these final votes will determine if this once-in-a-generation legislation makes it to the President's desk. That's up to us. We need to make sure the champions in Congress who've worked with the President to pass this bill know we're supporting them -- and that thos

3rd of July at Eagle Tavern will be chock full of politicians and music

Independence Day celebration at Watkinsville's venerable Eagle Tavern at the corner of Main and Third Street in Oconee County will be going on from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, July 3rd, 2010 with live entertainment by the James Hunter band and the Farmer's Market (starting at 8 am), barbecue (for sale), a watermelon eating contest, some All-American snacks, a moon walk (which is the inflatable bouncy thing), a petting zoo, some iron working with an anvil and forge, hay rides and and old timey dress up to go with the fun games. There will be free cotton candy, lemonade and popcorn.  I wager there will also be more political candidates there than you can shake a stick at, both running and elected. That night at Ashford Manor Bed and Breakfast will feature a concert performed by the group Abbey Road Live featuring Beatles cover songs as sung by the very talented Athens musicians Michael Wegner, Timi Conley, Dave Domizi and Andrew Hamner with doors opening at 5 pm for the evenin

Should we add your name in support of Wall St. reform?

Image
Friend -- After more than seven months of work and a prolonged effort by Organizing for America supporters, House and Senate leaders just agreed on a final Wall Street reform bill. They're moving fast toward final votes. This is the final hurdle to enacting the toughest financial reforms since the Great Depression -- and delivering another historic accomplishment for the American people. These votes in the House and Senate will come down to the wire. Lobbyists for the big banks will be knocking down the doors on Capitol Hill this week, so we're going all-in over the next few days to fight back -- and that starts with a massive public display of support for the bill. Many in Congress are fighting hard alongside President Obama for Wall Street reform -- they need to hear our support. Others are standing with the special interests -- and it's even more important that they hear from us too. Add your name now to the growing list of OFA supporters who are standing
