'Walking Dead' producer cancels UGA appearance  bummer, oh well, at least it gives me more reason to post plenty of clips from my favorite show and quite a boon to the Georgia tourism and television production economy.

I think anyone who does not believe the Civil War, or the War of Northern Aggression as my Grandmother called it, was not about slavery needs to go to Cine' and watch "Django Unchained" right away. The South still lies about the Civil War

Big crowd at OCAF opening

People paid double but they did not seem to mind as a couple of hundred shoppers descended on Rocket Gym in downtown Watkinsville Friday evening.  Records, clothes, furniture and plenty more flew out the door.

The Mayor told me

It's a water valve cover and it's the purview of the utility department, who have been notified of its missing status.  THANKS MAYOR IVIE!

FW: The Pastures of Rose Creek: This Week's Harvest

Sincerely,  Dan Matthews Date: Thu, 14 Mar 2013 18:17:53 -0400 Subject: The Pastures of Rose Creek: This Week's Harvest From: pastures1051@gmail.com To: Hello all!  A quick email this week to let you know the produce stand will be out there Saturday from 9am-1pm 9 (or until the veggies give out)....with an extra special treat for all y'all - Willy P. mans the stand this week (as John and I galavant to Nashville...wa-hoo!). Last week the greens were very popular so the delicious mixed greens and arugula are in recovery, but we will have at our produce stand.... pasture raised eggs pecans escarole icicle radishes and holy moly - we still have a few small beets (good thrown in a salad and/or for their greens!) Oh!  And of course some of John's latest pottery from last week's firing will also be on our table. Until Saturday.... Small "manhole" cover missing at Third and Barnett Shoals in Watkinsville

Image
In the grand scheme of things, this request is small and somewhat insignificant. But for some time there has been a missing "manhole" cover at the intersection of Third Street and Barnett Shoals in Watkinsville. This is of course along the parade route for the Christmas Parade, and a popular path for joggers, walkers, and even the occasional horse drawn carriage. Yes, this has been missing more than a year. Yes, it is way too small to be a man hole cover, as no man or even child could fit down there. My son can barely fit his foot in there. But that does not mean a baby carriage, or a trike, or most bicycles, would not run roughshod over this hazard. The Watkinsville City council does a good job of responding to the needs of its residents. I did not make a stink about this last night at the meeting. I was happy to hear  the council members raise concerns over oil spills and falling porches on their own, and report what  the residents had asked them. But

Largest Thrift Sale in NE GA This Weekend at Old Gym on School Street

Image
Feel free to stay away from Downtown Watkinsville and leave all the treasure to me. There will be all kinds of gems uncovered tonight on the early sale or the rest of this weekend with the rest of the rummage sale items, running the gamut from clothing to electronics to furniture to sporting goods to who knows what at the sale on School Street in the old Rocket Gymnasium at the intersection of Thrasher Drive and School Streets near the ball field. That is where there will be plenty of parking if the games of our children do not take precedence (which I hope they do). I will be in line in plenty of time tonight. UGA to honor 'Walking Dead' producer Gale Ann Hurd

Image
Anyone who does not realize how important this television series is to the State of Georgia is a zombie or hermit. They need to watch every Sunday 9-10 on AMC that has the largest and most loyal watchers of any television series today. It is also on Thursdays in black and white. Congrats to Gale Ann Hurd for the deserving award. I salute the University of Georgia for realizing what a treasure they have here in the own back yard. This media phenomenon has evolved from a graphic novel to best television series today, and so far it takes place entirely in our state and has created a tourism boom in south central Georgia. Dublin City Schools Using Solar Power to Energize School, Save Money - 41NBC

Karl Rove - fundraising for Brian Kemp - booked for Georgia GOP convention May 17-18

Your daily jolt: Karl Rove booked for Georgia GOP convention Somehow I think that Karl Rove raising money for Brian Kemp could kill any chance for the Georgia Secretary of State of seeking higher office here, at least any time soon. Newt Gingrich is supposed to be coming down from Virginia for the expected coronation of John Padgett as the next chair of the Georgia GOP, although B.J. Van Gundy, Alex Johnson and Seth Harp might have a thing or two to say about that. Also Padgett's description of the current Commander in Chief as a "Chicago thug" on Tim Bryant's NewsMaker Tuesday on Fox News 1340 WGAU AM in Athens will not do much to garner much support in the African-American circles with such racially tinged language, despite any grand schemes for manuals on how to deal with outbreaks of Ron/Rand Paul supporters.

Cowsert Congressional run put on hold until end of current legislative session

It may take only ten business days or just a little longer, but that is when you can expect State Senator Bill Cowsert to make his official announcement for his intention to run for the Republican nomination for the 10th District Congressional seat left vacant when Paul Broun decided to run for the US Senate seat held currently by Saxby Chambliss. Cowsert sounded like he was running this morning on Tim Bryant's NewsMaker Monday as well as in the announcement he sent to Blake Giles of the Oconee Enterprise this afternoon. The only other announced candidates are a couple of extremists in John Douglass of Social Circle and a Tea Party activist from the Augusta area named Brian Slowinski. The Oconee Enterprise > Latest Updates > Cowsert to make announcement soon

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide Up for discussion

Sometimes a book discussion goes well beyond the sphere of influence of our county and onto that of the rest of the world. This is one of those profound moments. Sincerely,  Dan Matthews To: oconee@yahoogroups.com From: ppriest@charter.net Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2013 08:34:34 -0400 Subject: [oconee] Up for discussion   This month the book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats is reading a book that Carolyn See of The Washington Post describes this way: "Exquisitely crafted prose and sensationally interesting material . . . I really do think this is one of the most important books I have ever reviewed." The book is "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide." It's written by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. I remember amazing columns Kristof wrote for The New York Times that described what happened when he bought two women to free them from brothels in Asia. Those stories are recou
