Oconee County Sheriff's Office rescue dog, arrest driver for DUI

Earlier this evening Sgt. Partain responded to a call of a dog locked in a car at the Bell's at Butlers Crossing. The outside temperature was 99 degrees, and the internal temperature of the car as measured with a handheld thermometer was 123 degrees. There was also a can of gasoline inside the vehicle, and Sgt. Partain described the smell as stifling. The driver of the car, Wesley Mark Terrell (60) of Creekshore Drive, told Sgt. Partain that the dog drove him to Bell's to  buy some corn. Terrell appeared to be highly intoxicated. Sgt. Partain arrested him and charged him with Animal Cruelty and DUI. This case differs from a recent case at Walmart where the driver of the car had been away from it for over one hour prompting the deputies on scene to not make a DUI charge. Animal Control took custody of the dog.

Krieder's book "We Learn Nothing" on tap for July Oconee book discussion

Image
For July the book group - sponsored by the Oconee Democrats - is reading a book of essays called "We Learn Nothing” by cartoonist Tim Kreider. It’s a thought-provoking book about timely topics such as our busy busy lives and about how much we relish those feelings of loathing for . . . well, let me just throw out Dick Cheney as an example. Here’s just a quick sample of his writing, here about the Tea Party: "The main difference between us is our preferred villains: the left blames Corporate America for the ruinous state of the union, while the right blames the Government. Not many people on either side seem to have noticed that these alleged antagonists are literally the same people. They move from regulatory agencies to lobbying firms, Congress to corporate boards and back like Afghani warlords switching sides between Coalition and Insurgency depending on who’s paying better that week." Baldwin County Sheriff pens epic mental health care warning for Georgia (Thanks Oconee County Sheriff for sharing)

Dear Law enforcement supporters, For many years now I have spoken with you about the breakdown of mental health services in our state. Your county jails and sta te prisons have become the “new mental health facilities.”Today due to the many changes in our lives; especially narcotics and the economic slowdown, over Forty Thousand Georgians are inmates in county jails. I estimate roughly 20 percent have a mental health diagnosis. This means that we are servicing between eight and ten thousand inmates that suffer from a mental illness. In addition with the closure of some of our state hospitals many people in our communities have lost their network of help. Sheriffs and Probate Judges can no longer assist families and guide them to treatment and assistance as in the past.  Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and there are very few families in Georgia that have not been affected by this illness either with family members, friends or associates in the work place. Today

Can you foster a puppy in Oconee County?

Image
Friends of Oconee County Animal Control Bad news this morning... Unfortunately, we see some citizens of our county behave in a very upsetting way. That way being when they dump a bucket of 10 4-5 week old puppies at our gates overnight... Yes, this happens. So we are now stocked full of puppies- yesterday near closing someone brought in a box full of 8 also 4-5 week old lab mix puppies (brown and black) that someone dumped at their house and they then brought to us. That's 18 in all. Despite their unfortunate situations, they are all safe now in our care. Receiving baths and toenail trims, food and water, and soft bedding to sleep on. We are now actively searching for any rescues that can help us out and pull either one of the litters, both, or even just a few pups. And we are also looking for the person who left these little babies at our gates. Defenseless and filthy. In a bucket. We're also looking for information on who left the other litter of 8 in a

Thick as thieves

From: "Bryan Long, Better Georgia" Date:06/30/2014 8:02 AM (GMT-05:00) To: Dan Matthews Subject: Thick as thieves. Gov. Nathan Deal may have broken Georgia law by paying himself and his family members from his campaign funds and later covering up the paper trial, but Georgia's Attorney General has decided not to even look at the evidence. On Friday, just before 5 p.m., Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens declined a request to investigate Gov. Nathan Deal's cover-up of campaign finance records. This letter signals the death knell for all hope that our one-party state government could fairly and transparently investigate Gov. Deal. While it's true that Georgia's state auditor still has an open investigation, it's also true that the state auditor was appointed by Gov. Deal and has limited the scope of his investigation to personnel issues. Now that our state government has proven to

Home - Complete Streets: Prince Avenue

I just listened to Tony Eubanks on NewsMaker Tuesday on 1340 WGAU AM and he referenced this site. I think residents of Watkinsville would do well to perhaps consider this in the latest redesign or planning on Main Street, Simonton Bridge/Whitehall Road, or Harden Hill Road. I also wanted to share it with my friend Dana Gill as it resembles her walking on the first conceptual rendering.  Home - Complete Streets: Prince Avenue

Oconee commission incumbent faces challenge by former commissioner

A runoff election for a seat on the Oconee County Board of Commissioners features a long-time incumbent facing an opponent who once served 20 years on the commission. Post 3 incumbent Margaret Hale, a commissioner since 2000, was the top vote getter in the Republican primary held in May, but she was closely challenged by William E. “Bubber” Wilkes, who served on the commission from 1985 to 2005. The candidates served alongside each other on the commission for four years. During the primary, Hale received 1,787 votes. Wilkes followed with 1,616. A third candidate, Maria Caudell, forced the race into a runoff by gathering 892 votes. The runoff is planned for July 22, but early voting is taking place through July 18 at the Board of Elections office inside the county courthouse on Main Street in Watkinsville. Hale, a Savannah native who works as an administrative specialist at the University of Georgia Library, has lived in the Farmington community of Oconee County

Every Single Day - Valarie Wilson video for Georgia School Superintendent race

Wilson Releases Video Ad I want to use all of my skills and experiences to help students achieve dreams Decatur, Ga. - June 30, 2014 - Marking the first day of early voting for the Georgia Primary Run Off election, Valarie Wilson, candidate for State School Superintendent released her first video advertising. "I'm excited to share with Georgians why I am running for State School Superintendent. Every child deserves a quality education, effective teachers and strong schools," said Wilson. Wilson joined the school board of the City Schools of Decatur in 2002 and became the moving force behind the establishment of the College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center, acting on research that shows that early childhood education is critical to success in the K-12 years. As Board Chair from 2005-2011, Valarie helped to turn around the finances of the district. Through a forceful-if sometimes painful-reorganization, the district was able to move
