Skill sets define House 113 race || OnlineAthens.com

Blake Aued analyzes the Republican candidates for the nomination to run against Suzy Compere in November. There could very well be a three way tie for first (or last). This race could be decided by less than 100 votes top to bottom. I think Shook will finish third, and Huckabee second and Malcom first. But Huckabee has been sending the most mailers and getting Zell Miller to record robo-calls. For the record, I absolutely despise robo-calls and refuse to support or vote for any candidate that uses them. Skill sets define House 113 race || OnlineAthens.com

Radar pinpoints long-unmarked resting places in Watkinsville cemetery || OnlineAthens.com

Great to see the D.A.R. is being proactive in identifying long lost plots of buried occupants of the city's most well-known cemetery. It is fortunate that there are still grants to give Mr. DeHart some money to pay for his important research. Radar pinpoints long-unmarked resting places in Watkinsville cemetery || OnlineAthens.com

Child dies after morning wreck on perimeter || OnlineAthens.com

I give big props to both the Oconee County Sheriff's Department and their counterparts in Athens-Clarke County and the helicopter pilot and the doctors everyone else who heroically tried to save this child's life. Please drive carefully out there people. I know with this heat we are all in a hurry to return to the refrigerated indoors, but show some consideration for the other drivers out there who are in more of a hurry than you are. Art Masters demise does not bode well for Watkinsville

I am deeply saddened at the impending closing of Art Masters Gallery and Framing in downtown Watkinsville. They sponsored my radio show back when I was an AM radio talk show host, so I am not the least bit impartial about the demise of this business. The owner Geoff Seila is one of my best friends as well. Almost every framed photo, newspaper or piece of art in my house was done by them either under Seila's tutelage or perhaps as far back as Peggy Holcomb's ownership.  Peggy is of course the head of the Oconee County tourism department now. I have traded with Art Masters in at least four different locations and six different incarnations of space and scope of business.  I hope nothing but the best for Geoff and his wife Sherry and their son Drew. Geoff recently thought about closing this business before, and he was talked out of it by former Watkinsville Mayor Jim Luken. He worked hard to come up from under the mountain of debt accumulated from a variety of loans and othe

Challenger to Paul Broun, Jr. Releases First Fundraising Numbers

Surprisingly high numbers for Edwards Woven brightly,  Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. Date: Wed, 7 Jul 2010 14:08:20 -0400 Subject: Challenger to Paul Broun, Jr. Releases First Fundraising Numbers Greeting Dan, I wanted to share some exciting news with you. Our campaign reached our first benchmark in this race by raising $102,248.62 during our first fundraising quarter. This impressive amount largely exceeds expectations and proves the campaign's viability, especially since the incumbent's campaign holds more debt than cash on hand.  I'm so grateful to have such wide-spread and strong support from throughout the District and across the country. This report shows voters are responding to my campaign to send responsible leadership to Congress. Frankly, many in our District are suffering, and our incumbent refuses to help. Together we will send responsible leadership to Congress that supports our community. Together we will win this race! Thanks for supporting this c

This Fourth of July

Image
Friend -- The Fourth of July is especially dear to my family. For us, it is not just our nation's birthday. It is the day Michelle and I became parents 12 years ago. And every year we enjoy watching the fireworks with Malia on her birthday. As we celebrate the profound pride of being American, today is a time to honor the women and men in our armed forces, whose immeasurable bravery and sacrifice have made our country what it is today. That sacrifice is shared with husbands and wives, with sons and daughters, with fathers and mothers, who are asked to wait at home as their loved ones protect our nation. Their heroism, too, has helped pave the path of our freedom. Even before we moved into the White House, Michelle was a champion for those military families. She has witnessed their struggles, and she has made it her personal mission to fight for them. On this Fourth of July, she recorded a personal message, commemorating our nation's birthday and paying tribute to thes
