Photos of our next Governor Jason Carter and Lt. Gov. Connie Stokes

Presumptive Democratic Gubernatorial nominee State Senator Jason Carter and Lieutenant Goveror candidate Connie Stokes addressed a sold out crowd of more than 350 Democratic party supporters from Gwinnett, White, Oglethorpe, Clarke, Greene, and Oconee counties (and elsewhere) last night at the Classic Center in Athens, Georgia. David Jarrett gave the invocation, and Chairman Joe Wisenbaker was the emcee. Former party treasurer Russell Edwards announced he was running for Father of the Year before introducing his very pregnant wife Airee Hong (who is due in March). I had the distinct pleasure of sitting next to presumptive Democratic 10th District Congressional nominee Ken Dious and his lovely wife Annette and staff Raven Bennett from Oconee County. Oconee County residents Pat and Neil Priest bought a table as well for this wonderful function. I enjoyed seeing solar power magnate Drew Bowen and my old University Health Center cohort Dr. Karen Prasse in attendance as well. She is

Sign this petition to stop Georgia discrimination bills

The email below is from Denis Antoine, a CREDO activist in Savannah, Georgia. Denis started a petition on  CREDO Mobilize , where activists can launch their own campaigns for progressive change. Will you help Denis pressure Governor Deal and the Georgia legislature to reject legislation that would make discrimination legal by  signing his petition  and sharing it with your friends and family? Tell Governor Deal and the Georgia legislature: Reject HB 1023 and SB 377. Dear Daniel, Two bills currently being considered by the Georgia legislature -- HB 1023 and SB 377 -- would allow any business to refuse services and goods based on religious convictions. If signed into law they would open a Pandora's box of discrimination targeting gays and lesbians, women, racial minorities and certain religious groups. The bills are moving through the Georgia legislature quickly, so we need to act fast to stop this pro-discrimination policy from becoming Georgia law. That's wh

Georgia Republican Senate candidate Paul Broun vows to vote only for ‘biblical’ bills | The Raw Story

I do not want any representative or Senator of mine to advocate for a theocracy, including Jody Hice. Republican Senate candidate Paul Broun vows to vote only for ‘biblical’ bills (via Raw Story ) Voters in Georgia should send Rep. Paul Broun to the U.S. Senate because he will only vote in favor of legislation that is based on Christian values, the Republican candidate said Saturday. Georgia may follow Arizona's anti-gay lead

Why does the Georgia GOP hate gay and gay-friendly people (by far the majority in this state)? The only possible explanation or rationale is that the racist rednecks are going to have to show their vote on this one, and will be voted out in every corner of Georgia eventually. Intelligence and tolerance will win out over bigotry and hatred every time. Georgia may follow Arizona's anti-gay lead

New OCAF writing group

New writing group This is a brand new group, please let your writing friends know about it.  Cindy, our new director at OCAF, wants you to know OCAF welcomes and encourages writers. Subject: New writing group Hello all - Larry McDougald and I are reviving the old "Murder and Mayhem for Money" group that used to meet at the Georgia Center and was led by Harriette Austin. We will meet at the OCAF building in Watkinsville, the old schoolhouse that now houses the arts foundation there. Every Wednesday, starting this week (February 26), 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. The cost will be $20 for the semester, a bargain. We'll follow the same procedures that Harriette used - read for ten minutes, followed by group discussion of your story. We hope for constructive criticism in the "M. M. M." tradition. I hope you can all make it - tell your writer friends, please. Larry and I have felt the need for such a group, and hope to make a

Oconee County Equestrian facility plays host to UGA upset of 3rd ranked Auburn

UGA equestrian upsets No. 3 Auburn For the first time since the 2011-12 season, the Georgia equestrian team defeated Auburn in regular season competition. The No. 7 Bulldogs posted an 11-8 victory Saturday over the No. 3 Tigers at the UGA Equestrian Complex in Oconee County. With the victory, Georgia (8-3, 4-2 in the Southeastern Conference) can be seeded no less than a tie for first place in the SEC Championships. The Bulldogs were led by Liza Finsness (equitation on the flat), Rachel Kolb (horsemanship) and McKenzie Lantz (reining), all of whom earned MOP honors. Finsess defeated Auburn’s Chirstina Linn 87-85 in equitation on the flat, Kolb bested Lacy Watson 75.5-74 in horsemanship and Lenz garnered a 71-70 decision in reining. Georgia will host New Mexico State on March 7, the Bulldogs’ last home meet of the season.
