The Pastures of Rose Creek: This Week's Harvest

From: Pastures Rose Creek Date:12/13/2013 2:24 PM (GMT-05:00) To: Subject: The Pastures of Rose Creek: This Week's Harvest Hello all!  And this week we kick off the weekend with the very first ever Bishop Central WINTER Market! (…and a recipe for the worlds best secret to the perfect steak.) Wait…hold the phone.  A winter market?  It has the right nostalgia…the right amount of charm and whimsy to its name….the winter market. But how practical is it?  What is "in season" in winter? Well, while the rest of the garden beds are snoring…hibernating in their warm winter slumber, nestled deep under a thick blanket of soil…things like collards, kale, some of your favorite root veggies (beets, radishes, turnips…), cabbage, broccoli…these things are thriving!  Even greens like arugula and salad greens can make it pretty deep into winter.  Now some of these greens and things can handle a little snow….siberian kale, to name just one!  But othe

Letter to the Editor from Nancy DeRemo to the Oconee Enterprise

Dear Editor:  Oconee School has had five teens kill themselves in the last three years because of being bullied. But Oconee County Schools has only reported three report bulling incidents in the last year. This because it is up to the Principal of the school to decide if a student was bullied or it was impulsive behavior on part of another student. If the Principal decides it is impulsive behavior on the part of student then the other parent is not notified nor is told about the incident. My son in 9th grade at OCHS had senior boy rub his butt against my son private parts as he was leaving the lunch room in the morning. My son chased the boy down the hallway. I never was told about it and Mrs. Korngold (the Special Education Director for OCHS) notify me that she was at high school that day and my son was having wonderful day (the first time she done this). My daughter told me that day all the students in the high school where talking about what happ

The Oconee Democrats have an interesting and diverse slate of books for next year's book group line-up. The list includes poetry, a book about hunger in America, a young adult novel about the Haitian earthquake, a biography about the real Count of Monte Cristo (who was black), and even some humorous works such as "The Good Lord Bird." I won't overload you with the whole list just yet. Right now I'd like to call your attention to the February book written by Georgia's Democratic candidate for governor: Jason Carter. I think you'll be impressed with the book -- and the man. The book is titled "Power Lines: Two Years on South Africa's Borders." We'll talk about that Febr

Now this is the way to lobby for a new courthouse facility

I am posting this in response to your December 15, 2013 editorial Oconee County Commissioners Hold Closed Meeting And Tour To Discuss Courthouse Facilities  The editorial is incomplete when it comes to the factual basis for closing the meeting to the general public.  You may recall that during Judge Sweat’s presentation on November 26, 2013, that the members of the Board of Commissioners and the public that attended that meeting were reminded that Georgia law requires that a survey be conducted every four years of the security plan for the courthouse.  That security plan must be, by law, prepared by the Sheriff and presented to the Chief Judge for approval and the county commissioners for funding. For legal reference I will refer you to OCGA 15-16-10 (10) and 15-16-10 (b).  The history behind the legislation is rather straightforward.  Following the murderous rampage of Brian Nichols at the Fulton County Courthouse some years ago, the legislature amended the law ordering the secur
