Health reform cannot wait

Image
Friend -- The millions of Americans suffering in a health care system that costs too much, and denies too many care, cannot afford another year-long debate. President Obama made that clear at yesterday's bipartisan meeting on reform: While he is listening to good ideas from both sides of the aisle and hopes to move forward in a bipartisan fashion, the American people cannot afford an incremental approach. Watch highlights from the bipartisan meeting here. Yesterday, the President extended a hand to the Republicans and showed he's open to any idea that will help cover the uninsured, cut costs, and give Americans control over their own health care. But he made clear that the millions of Americans who cannot afford insurance can't wait on political games in Washington. After this meeting, all ideas are on the table. Now, Congress must move swiftly to complete and pass a final bill. It was a conversation focused on substance, not process, and it showed. Bo

From the candidate who I think would do the best for Georgia in replacing Sonny Perdue: From: DuBose Porter <dubose@porterforgeorgia.com> To: danjmatt@bellsouth.net Sent: Fri, February 26, 2010 6:43:57 AM Subject: DuBose's Blog: My wife's announcement. My wife, Carol Porter, announces her candidacy for Lt. Governor. (AP Photo/Erik S. Lesser) "My wife, Carol, announced she is running for Lt. Governor of the state of Georgia today. Over the last several weeks, there has been a viral movement to draft Carol for Lt. Governor that has taken on a life of its own. There truly is no one more qualified or who knows the issues better. Carol is an awesome person and would make an awesome Lt. Governor. She announced this morning at 11 a.m. and as of 6:00 p.m. today, google shows there have been 123 stories posted on her announcement, including The New York Times, The Huffington Post, The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post . It seems Georgia is finding

The dynamics of the first husband-wife ticket in Georgia politics and Pete's opposing (?) Flagpole viewpoint

The AJC's excellent writer Jim Galloway's take on the Carol Porter and DuBose Porter political ticket for Georgia. Good quotes and links giving the Michael Thurmond and Casey Cagle positions as well. True American hero needs to be honored, and his murderer needs to be condemned not praised

This government worker is a true American hero who served two tours in Vietnam that we all need to remember, and shun the stupid comments by Rep. Steve King of Iowa somehow giving his killer some sort of justification over tax frustration.  Thanks to the Athens Banner-Herald editor Jim Thompson and their columnist Myra Blackmon for pointing me toward this blog and article. Republicans launch anti-Barnes Web site || OnlineAthens.com

Could the Republicans be somewhat hypocritical with the "No Royalty" tag on Roy Barnes? Just ask those who paid for it. That would be the Georgia GOP. It would be somewhat typical of the bizarro world of Georgia politics if Carol Porter's press conference this morning about the possibility of her running with her husband DuBose Porter on a husband and wife ticket could really catch fire and propel them to the Governor's mansion instead. I will never take anything for granted again in the weird world of wrestling known as political hucksterism and taking aim at your opponent perhaps prematurely. It does not cost that much to get a website up and running these days, and I applaud the continued waste of bandwidth and resources by the State Republican party. That is somewhat symbolic as well. The article does not feature a functioning link and I somehow forgot to add it this morning myself. Republicans launch anti-Barnes Web site || OnlineAthens.com

Friend -- Tomorrow, the President will be hosting leaders from both parties at a bipartisan meeting about how to reform our broken health insurance system. It's a critical step toward getting the job done on health reform -- and a historic moment you won't want to miss. Senators and representatives will gather with the President to talk through the bills that have already passed the House and Senate, as well as the proposal President Obama released on Monday. And they'll have an open discussion about any new ideas from either side of the aisle for how to solve this crisis. OFA will live-stream the meeting starting at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. We'll provide live updates and feature video of key moments during and after the event. Will you join us for this pivotal moment? Fwd: Details of the President's plan

Image
Friend -- President Obama just released a new health reform proposal -- and our political director sent me an overview that I wanted to share with you. Here's the bottom line: It's a plan that puts Americans in charge of their own health care, bridges the gap between the Senate and House bills, and adds additional ideas from both parties to fight waste and abuse. The plan will serve as a starting point for discussion at a major bipartisan meeting this Thursday between the President and congressional leaders to discuss Republican and Democratic ideas for improving our health care system. And if there are more areas of agreement, they'll be added to the plan. Ultimately, we're going to move forward with a bill that lowers costs, increases competition, provides relief for families and small businesses, and covers the uninsured -- and we'll need your help to do it. Please take a look below at the details of the proposal so that you'll have all the

It is appropriate the month long celebration of Jeannette Rankin's 130 years of life and legacy should commence in Oconee County where her distinctive roundhouse remains near Butler's Crossing. Barnes has big bucks in Governor's race, and Johnathan McGinty is quoted

The Georgia Governor's race appears to be more and more a Roy Barnes versus John Oxendine match if the money and tainted poll results are any indication. Georgia GOP invents new ways of cannibalism and sleaze

I have to give it to John Oxendine, each time he makes another political blunder or gaffe, none of the missteps by themselves seems to be the fatal blow, but each one taken together paints a portrait of a paranoid, corrupt, sleazy politician ready to pimp out his industry and family for the sake of higher office. I can only pray Republicans are stupid enough to nominate this insurance industry windbag thus guaranteeing a Democratic candidate will take over the Georgia Governor's mansion again. Maybe after a bloody run-off with Karen Handel even further insuring a GOP loss in November. Pollster Matt Towery was never been held as the paragon of nonpartisan political honor, so none of these shenanigans should come across as all that surprising. I am sorry he had a vertigo faceplant in the tropics, but I have no sympathy for him on that regard and find the timing a little suspect or at least convenient for him. But I think it is time for someone else to have a Georgia based politic
