Candidate Forums

From Lee Becker and Friends of Barber Creek:  Dear Friends,   Friends of Barber Creek is one of the sponsors of the Candidate Forums scheduled for 7-10 p.m. on Monday (June 2) and Wednesday (June 4) at the Oconee County Library on Experiment Station Road in Watkinsville. Please plan to attend and bring along your friends and neighbors. If you also can bring a plate of sweets and drinks to share, please do that as well.   The two candidates for Chair of the Board of Commissioners will lead off the program on Monday, followed by the three candidates for Coroner and the eight candidates for the four posts on the Board of Commissioners.   On Wednesday, the 11 candidates for the Board of Education will be featured.   At both Forums, citizens will have a chance to ask questions of the candidates. I'll moderate the first half of the first session; Russ Page will moderate the second half of the first session. Charlie Baugh will moderate the Wednesday session. As moderators, we&

I will resist "The List" and insist you assist

Once again former Oconee County Board of Commissioners chair Wendell Dawson scooped some political delight tonight by setting his sights on an anonymous tripe being pedaled as "The List" on his AVOC.info blog. The only rumored sighting of the poorly worded memo has been at the Shell Station down yonder on 15 in what I reckon is South Watkinsville, and I would well imagine that those will disappear not long after the first or second B.O.C. or B.O.E. candidate comes over there for breakfast Saturday morning and reads right through the blatant attempt at retaining the status quo. People are angry and ready for a change of direction in their government at the local level. The first and most obvious target is current Oconee County Board of Commissioners chair G. Melvin Davis and his cadre of developers and wealthy business owners. Chairman Dawson does a fine job of naming names there, but Tom Little and Larry Benson seem to be at the top of the list. They have some serious inves

Ashley Hood will do good, Carter Brank kind of stank, Kim Argo packed her cargo

I am looking forward to hearing the candidates for Post 3 of the Oconee County Board of Education at next week's forum sponsored by a consortium of groups at the Library on Experiment Station Road Wednesday. I listened intently to Tim Bryant's interview with GBI agent Carter Brank today on his News Maker Friday show on News Talk 1340 WGAU. Brank kind of sank in my estimation when he talked about how he might want to consider raising taxes and repeated the mantra about not knowing enough about the Charter School system. I hope some candidate will tell me what they know about the Charter School and it seems that David Weeks is already chair-designate and is willing to explore the possibility of changing the whole system over like they have somewhere near Augusta (Westboro?). I understand Kim Argo is skipping the event at the library so we do not get to hear from all the candidates.

Saturday sounds of Summer augments Ashford Manor's wonderful music series

Ashford Manor Bed and Breakfast is the best kept secret in Georgia. They have a great Concerts on the Lawn series on every other Monday at their multi-terraced backyard, and I have had a great time with my son Lowell at the packed concerts so far. Former Fuzzy Sprouts Timi Conley, Dave Domizi, Michael Wegner and assorted friends played Beatles covers as Abbey Road Live to start the series a couple Mondays back, and the Last Waltz Ensemble played various tunes made more famous by The Band and Bob Dylan in a great tribute the other evening. Packway Handle Band will be performing their catchy combination of bluegrass, gospel and modern music Monday. Now the best producer engineer in John Keane will lead the Strawberry Flats through some thunderous covers starting Saturday, June 7th as part of another series of shows . Tin Cup Prophette and a Jimmy Buffett Cover Band will perform as part of the Saturday Sounds of Summer series.
