Reception honoring Judge Steve C. Jones on Sunday, June 5

(Athens, GA) – A community reception honoring Judge Steve C. Jones will take place on Sunday, June 5 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. in the Athena Ballroom of the Classic Center at 300 North Thomas Street. A ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m. The reception will celebrate Judge Jones’ appointment to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and thank him for his extensive community involvement over the years. Judge Jones’ character and experience in the criminal justice system resulted in his nomination for judgeship to the United States District Court by President Barack Obama in November 2010. His nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate in February and his commission was received on March 3, 2011. The investiture ceremony was held in Atlanta on May 19, 2011. Jones is an Athens native who graduated from Cedar Shoals High School and holds both a bachelor’s and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Georgia. He serve

Questions of the day

Why would a failing bank in Oconee County make a $6.8 million loan to a project in Lovejoy, a 103 miles away? We need to know answers, Chuck Williams, and how can the voters of the 113th trust you as a State Representative when you do not follow the rules and laws of banking to the detriment of your non-FDIC investors? Why appoint people to the board of North Georgia Bank with no financial experience? Why do you not replace people who have died on the Board of Directors? North Oconee High School is going to have a large car museum across the street thanks to that foreclosure sale Saturday by UGA. Because the University of Georgia was a land grant University founded before 1790, they can simply receive the property of the J. Phil Campbell Sr. Natural Resource and Ag Center from the Federal Government gratis. Getting an extra $300,000.00 for property valued at $600,000.00 (that's $900,000.00 total) is no way to run a campaign for State Representative either. Are you tired of the

Gainesville State College should become Watkinsville State...

....or University of Oconee, or otherwise sever ties with the Hall County campus as quickly as possible and offer as many four year degrees that the University of Georgia does not. Go for the specialty degrees like Hospital Management and other areas not currently offered in Athens. Expand the campus across the street if you must, but at least have a decent array of collegiate degrees. Dr. Penny Mills   Dr. Margaret Venable ( t hanks Steve Smith ) and the fine folks on Bishop Farms Parkway have done an outstanding job under constantly overcrowded circumstances, and they deserve their own branding and identity. This would be another of my top priorities upon taking office at the House of Representatives for the 113th House District. I would also work together with the DOT and Oconee County to make sure the rear access to campus is done as seamlessly as possible, and I would work as a liaison between the City of Watkinsville and the DOT to make sure there is a transfer of property of t

Scenes from the campaign trail

Image
Dan Matthews campaigning in Watkinsville Things I have learned so far on the campaign trail: I was the only person to wear a tie to Watkinsville First Baptist Church this morning. Their service is more like a rock concert than a revival. It is completely acceptable to go to church with your neighbors. It is good to hear a differing viewpoint on matters of religion and morality. The members of this church were extremely friendly and welcoming. I had a great time listening to Paul Chambers have a small discussion at the end of the Bible study portion. It is nice to see how well churches blend in with the community, and you can see how well Pastor Carlos Sibley has led his flock. I am happy to know that Christians from Watkinsville are in Chad and Haiti helping people out. My 11-year-old son has begun to develop his own view of religion, and I am grateful that I have been able to expose him a wide array of churches, synagogues and other places of prayer. I love Oconee County, the 1
