  I'm a woman. I'm 19. I'm a student. And, this summer,  I worked for Better Georgia. Why? When I was in high school, I attended a talk where former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright addressed a group of students. I distinctly remember her emphasizing how essential women are to society, explaining that countries in which women are treated equally experience greater economic security. She also said,   "I think more than ever, women want to take care of themselves. And they want a voice in how that's done." This kind of attitude could not more applicable to Georgia. That's why I wanted to work for an organization that holds our government accountable to make real changes that will better our state. I wanted to help support advocacy efforts for women and all Georgians. It may seem like a lofty goal - challenging the current power structure to facilitate a positive change for the future. Confederate descendants and sympathizers meet Thursday at Watkinsville Community Center

OCONEE • Robert Jones, president of the Kennesaw Historical Society and a book author, will speak on the battle of the CSS Arkansas at a meeting of the Sons of Confederate Veterans at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Community Center on VFW Drive, Watkinsville. In July 1862, the Arkansas, an unfinished ironclad gunboat, ran the Mississippi and engaged several Union gunboats. It was scuttled because of engine failure after three weeks.
