Brazile: Georgia might become first 'purple' state

Georgia could be the first southern state to move out of firm Republican control to become a so-called "purple" state, where neither the GOP nor Democrats dominate voter rolls,  according to political analyst and strategist Donna Brazile. "I think if any state in the South can turn from red to blue, it's Georgia," said Brazile, who became the first African American to  direct a major presidential campaign when she became Al Gore's campaign manager in 2000. Why does Georgia keep missing federal deadlines?

Is it because we have a backward looking governor in Nathan Deal who should not be allowed to scuttle Georgia any further in a second term? Georgia misses food stamp backlog deadline

Georgia studying ways to improve hoops attendance | Bulldogs Beat with Seth Emerson | Macon.com

There are many simple methods to improve attendance at the Stegeman Coliseum for UGA home games. I would begin with eliminating permanently admission prices for all students, not just University of Georgia students. Secondly, and no one has ever been able to tell me why there is such a huge difference in price, make the season tickets for men's and women's hoops exactly the same. Third, never have late start tip off times except maybe road games. Fourth, get better half time performers, like local musicians such as Randall or Isaac Bramblett, John Berry, and others appropriate for all ages. Fifth, improve the food in the concession stands, and don't have BBQ at one, chicken at the other, and pretzels at the third. Hire a chef. Have more choices. Fifth, have some better non-conference early season games against interesting opponents: Iowa, Drake, UNI, Grinnell, Colorado State, Wyoming, Indiana, Mercer and Duke would be on the top of my schedule requests. Riding, Ray of Light she achieved a score of 65.987% exceeding her goal and the qualifying score required. McTaggart-Giuzio now has the two scores needed to apply for a certificate of capability, which is proof to the CAC Games organizers that she is good enough to compete and ride for Cayman at the games. McTaggart-Giuzio has competed competently at games before and at the even bigger Pan-Am Games, both times on her current horse, Ray of Light. Once this certificate is submitted, she must wait to see if she is in the top six qualifiers in the region. Missed the health care deadline? It's not too late

It's not too late to get covered. A few routes remain open for those who missed the health care law's big enrollment deadline. Millions may be eligible for a second chance to sign up for subsidized insurance this year. And people who get coverage after the deadline can still avoid, or at least reduce, the fine for going uninsured. Here are five options for those still without insurance: 1. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE GRACE PERIOD This special break was created for anyone who began enrolling in an insurance marketplace by Monday's deadline but didn't finish. That includes people stymied by website outages or overwhelmed phone lines, missing information on applications, and other problems or confusion. Those who started an application on HealthCare.gov should log on and finish it soon. Federal officials say they will take what time is necessary to work through cases pending online and will accept paper applications until April 7. Rules vary in the 14 states runni

ATLANTA — State records show many companies that have been awarded expansion grants have fallen short of delivering the number of jobs they promised to state officials looking to bolster economic development. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Sunday that a group of companies awarded more than $106 million in public grants fell short of producing the number of jobs they promised by about 42 percent. Georgia’s accountability agreement calls for companies receiving public grants to deliver at least 80 percent of the jobs they promised to fulfill legal obligations Companies receive incentives, fail to deliver jobs | The Augusta Chronicle

67 years do not fade horrible memories of the most complete Moore's Ford Lynching summary yet

Memories of Walton County lynchings linger nearly 67 years later By Christian Boone - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Even before his death, Roger Malcom’s grandmother had begun making arrangements for his funeral. Malcom, 24, was being held at the Monroe jail, charged with stabbing a white farmer, Barney Hester. Although Hester would survive, it was clear to most of Walton County’s black community that Malcom would not. Dora Malcom had asked Dan Young, a Monroe mortician and one of the area’s most prominent African-American businessmen, to tend to tend to her grandson’s body. Young tried to reassure her that wouldn’t be necessary to use hsi services, unaware that a group of white supremacists were already plotting Malcom’s execution. Five days later, on July 25, 1946, the mortician r

Why do SOME developers want to destroy the habitat for birds and turtles on Sea Island?

Image
Former Ga. Lt. Governor Pierre Howard It is pretty clear that the current out-of-state owners of Sea Island are using the tactic of Admiral Farragut who famously said, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" as they push their plan to cram eight mega-mansions on the fragile south end of the island, known as "The Spit." It is a fragile wisp of land that should never have been zoned for development. On its beaches, loggerhead sea turtles nest and endangered birds feed and rest in migration. Thousands of Georgians have marveled at its beauty from a spot on the north end of St. Simons Island called Gould's Inlet. Now, all that beauty is at risk. If it happens, it will be a sad day for Sea Island, a place whose national reputation for excellence and good taste has been guarded by the long ownership of the Jones family. Our presidents, from Calvin Coolidge on down, have visited Sea Island and marveled at its beauty. In those days, th
