What to expect at the Oconee County March for our Lives Saturday at OVP

The Oconee County Democratic Committee is sponsoring a local version of the March for our Lives at the Oconee Veterans Park (3500 Hog Mountain Road, Watkinsville, GA 30677) 11 am-1 pm Saturday, March 23, 2018 at the Tennis Pavilion in the park adjacent to the softball fields and tennis courts. Robert Wyatt, Treasurer of the OCDC, will greet the audience and ask for a moment of silence for the 17 victims of the Parkland massacre; thank Dan Matthews, Watkinsville City Councilman, for serving as our photographer; and then introduce John Daniell (BOC), who, after his remarks, will introduce Amy Parrish (BOE), who will then introduce Dave Shearon (Watkinsville mayor) who in turn will introduce Jonathan Wallace. Jonathan will introduce Deborah Gonzalez, and then the candidates: Chalis Montgomery, Richard Winfield, and Marisue Hilliard (who is a candidate in the 46th District Senate race). Finally Jonathan will introduce the two student speakers who will close the official program....

Your opinion on a winner depends on your perspective at local debates

I had a great time at the Oconee County GOP candidates forum last week at the Watkinsville Community Center. Just so every knows, I will repeat this for 10,000th time, I vote in the Republican primary in Oconee County depsite my McGovern Democratic party roots and upbringing, to have as much impact on the local representation and government. In a race like Regina Quick versus Doug McKillip in the GOP primary for State House 117th in 2012, it can make a difference when the vote total is 64 votes. In primaries or run offs when second and third can be separated by an equally small margin, the Democratic to Republican crossover vote can make a huge difference as well. Beyond that it might seem like a kiss of death for certain longtime Democratic supporters such as myself to offer up endorsements or to put a sign in their yard. I was not successful supporting the Board of Education candidacies of Chuck Toney or Ashley Hood, or the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners in Chuck H...

Breedlove still denies he is resigning from the Oconee County Board of Education

My buddy Johnathan McGinty over at his Beyond the Trestle blog kind of let the cat out of the bag on this one , which is fine, and I too had received multiple people telling me that Tom Breedlove was ABSOLUTELY positively possibly (?) fixing to resign from the Oconee County Board of Education and he had at least confirmed he quit his land planner job with local developers Williams and Associates not long ago and at the most recent Board of Education meeting. Twice Breedlove has written me back about his uncertainty regarding his family situation, and anyone who reads the local police blotter was aware of a recent domestic disturbance at his abode. Domestic violence, whether being accused as the perpetrator or the victim, is not something to be taken lightly, especially in the political arena. I hope the best for the Breedlove family and hope things get worked out but I think it is obvious there is some doubt concerning his political future around these parts at the very least. ...

Video of Board of Commissioners meeting

This is the video from the meeting where the Board of Commissioners vote to change the duties of the Chair and more specifically the Administrative Officer Allen Theriault in reporting to the Board and not just to the chair. Oconee County BOC Mtg. 8-4-09 from Oconee County IT on Vimeo .

Wednesday morning quarterbacking

I am just as flabbergasted at some of the results as the rest of you. The air was sucked out of the big upstairs courtroom last night as the final votes were tallied in the chair race. Sarah Bell ran a good race and emerged out of nowhere to challenge chairman Davis to the very end. I guess this means despite the perceived anti-incumbency fervor fanned by everything from Jim Ivey to secret meetings to courthouse moving rumors, Oconee County residents are reluctant to change leadership by a very slim margin. Looks like Oconee County voters rewarded John Daniell for his patience and smacked down Don Norris because of his suggestions about moving the courthouse. It also appears that there are more favorable memories of former fifth grade students of Kim Argo than there were people who actually voted for Ashley Hood. Hood knocked on many different doors in almost every subdivision in the county, but did not prevail despite an amazing collection of people helping her out. I really hope A...

Graphically speaking, who is Toney Boe?

I am a yard sign person. Plant a picket with me. The young ruffians in my subdivision and surrounding areas of Watkinsville do not like the growing number of signs in yard. The vandalism has increased from pulling the signs off the metal posts to now bending over the metal support frame. No sign by itself has ever won an election by itself, but signs are a way to energize the supporters and show the increasing popularity of a candidate. Seldom has a local campaign won without signs, but I am sure it has happened somewhere in the recent past. The simpler the sign the better in my humble estimation. Less is more, more or less. Sometimes signs will have only the basics. The most minimalist sign this time around in Oconee County, Georgia has to be the simple green sign of Chuck Toney, running for the Board of Education, post 4 versus Mike Hunter. So far I have not seen a Tom Breedlove or Mike Hunter sign (but I am sure they are there), but the Toney signs simply say TONEY BOE in two decks ...
