Grady L. Cornish: Higher-ed meddling is political || OnlineAthens.com

Athens Banner-Herald's letter to the editor author pegs the political right in Georgia and nails them in no uncertain manner about stupid meddling in higher education. Well written letter, Grady especially about our State Representative Bob Smith. Grady L. Cornish: Higher-ed meddling is political || OnlineAthens.com

Cable television customer service sucks in Oconee County

So anyone who might consider becoming a customer of Charter cablevision in or around Watkinsville, I would suggest not getting their home television service wired to the company. I spent a nightmarish week wrangling with the company over a "tag" or lack thereof that may or may not have resulted in one of their auditors disconnecting my service and

"Because of you"

Friend -- "It's because of you." That's what President Obama said before he took the stage in Iowa City right after health care reform passed. And I couldn't agree more. We've put together a quick video that highlights the incredible work you did over the last year, to honor and thank you for the history you made. Please watch the video, then celebrate by co-signing health care reform legislation with the President. We're offering a personalized certificate to every co-signer to make sure we can all have a way to commemorate this victory with the President. So check out the video, pass it along to your friends, and co-sign historic health reform with President Obama: http://my.barackobama.com/ThisIsChange Thanks for everything, Jeremy Jeremy Bird Deputy Director Organizing for America P.S. -- Great news: In addition to health and student loan reform, there's even more change happening. Oconee County Observations: Oconee County BOC Less Than Enthusiastic about Regionally Important Resource Designations

Once again Oconee County Observations' blogger and UGA Journalism professor Lee Becker scoops the lamestream media and shows that the Oconee County Board of Commissioners are not real happy when citizens by-pass our government to take matters into their own hands. Good job citizens. This is not an April Fool's Joke, but if it were, the joke would be on the Oconee County Board of Commissioners. No talk on Elijah Clarke and Trans-Oconee  this time around, but instead a great film called Carving Up Oconee instead. Sent: Wed, March 31, 2010 10:01:16 AM Subject: April 19 OCHS Meeting Dear Members - Given the opportunity to view Celestea Sharp 's film Carving Up Oconee and the need to discuss the latest developments concerning Heritage Park, we now have a modified agenda for the April 19 OCHS meeting.  The 77 minute film will be shown starting at 6 pm at the Gainsville State College Oconee Campus in Watkinsville followed by a 30 minute Q and A session.  This gives us time to get to and hold our business meeting from 8 to 9 pm at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF) on School Street in Watkinsville.  We will have food! Another victory: Student loan reform

Image
Friend -- In Spring 2007, on a conference call with students, then-Senator Barack Obama called for major reform to federal student loans: " We shouldn't be providing billions in taxpayer-funded giveaways to private banks. We should be providing an affordable, accessible college education to every American. " This morning, President Obama signed those historic reforms into law. Dr. Jill Biden, an educator for 29 years, just recorded a short video explaining what these groundbreaking reforms mean for education in America. Click here to watch. The bill the President signed this morning includes historic investments to make education more affordable, and delivers on a key campaign promise. The legislation: -- Ends subsidies to special-interest private lending companies. -- Doubles funding for Pell Grants to help more students afford a college education. -- Will cap a graduate's annual student-loan repayments at 10 percent of his or her income. -- ...

Full Moon Studios open house

Image
The Watkinsville recording studio recently changed ownership and Charlie Garrett hosted the band Kenosha Kid for an open house party Sunday on School Street. Kite to the Moon bass player Jay Rodgers also teaches clients how to play the bass at the accompanying Oconee School of Rock located in Full Moon Studio, sometimes teaching kids as young as 8 years old how to play songs such as "Yellow Ledbetter" by Pearl Jam and "The Waiting" by Tom Petty and Heartbreakers. Young Seth Addison Marbut has been learning these tunes from Charlie and Jay. According to their website: " Full Moon Studio is known for its large live tracking room and comfortable feel. This has become even more the case with the purchase of the business last August by local Athens musician Charlie Garrett. Over the past several months Charlie and head engineer, Jay Rodgers have been working diligently to restore Full Moon to its full potential. Although the upgrading and new looks are still ...

Update on some soccer field news and views

Last week I raved about the condition of the Westminster Christian School soccer fields, but this week I have to offer a little even handed criticism, and absolutely none of it is directed toward Oconee Futbol Club. The condition of the fields are fine, but it is the elements around the fields that need to be improved drastically. I understand the need for constant up-keep and revision, but the state of disrepair this weekend was highly unacceptable. The three soccer games going on were unimpeded by the general state of trash and disorganization. Just a quick clean up would take care of the large part of the trashy look around the fields. There were big piles of grass seed bags and other signs of neglect that a few bales of hay might do well to disguise. The trash around the stream is very unsightly. There are garbage cans which could very well be strategically placed around the grounds but instead are gathered in a hideous group near the aforementioned stream. With people coming...
