Friend -- On March 7th, 1965, 600 of us lined up to walk from Selma to Montgomery, to march for voting rights. When we tried to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge over the Alabama River, we were met by state troopers. They attacked us with tear gas, bullwhips, and nightsticks. It became known as Bloody Sunday, and the national outcry over the brutality that day led to the enactment, exactly 45 years ago today, of the Voting Rights Act. The progress we've made since then is remarkable. But the expansion of voting rights for millions did not happen overnight. It was the product of a continued struggle, by many people, over many years. And just as change did not come easily then, it does not come easily now. Discrimination still exists in America -- its effects can be as harmful as they were decades ago. And we can always become a better, more just society. Two years ago, this movement -- led by Barack Obama -- brought millions of people into the political process for the first time. I'm told that many of you are working hard now to get as many as possible of those folks -- and others from across the country who are with us in these fights -- to the polls this year. It's an important effort, and the legacy of the fight for the Voting Rights Act is that it is not only our right to vote, and to help others do so -- it is our duty. Can I count on you to help out between now and the elections in November? When I was a child, I tasted the bitter fruits of racial discrimination -- and I did not like it. That was what spurred me to act. In those early days, we sacrificed our very selves for our rights as Americans. But we never gave up. And now barriers that kept an entire people from full participation in this country have been removed. No longer are people who look like me met with violence when we register to vote. No longer is the idea that an African American could become president just a dream. We live in a better world, a better country. But our work is not complete. We cannot wait for someone else to make change. We must all do it. You must do it. I must do it. Please sign up to help millions more vote: http://my.barackobama.com/VolunteerVRA Thank you, Representative John Lewis

Karen Handel embraces Oconee County
illegal campaign signs within 150 feet of polling place
Davis detailed his working with Handel while she was chair of Fulton County Board of Commissioners in 2003. Handel thanked Davis and recognized various members of the audience as well.
The Oconee Reigonal Republican Women hosted the event and local party chair Jay Hanley made some announcements prior to the main event.
Among the more surprising attendees at this event were Oconee County Tourism Director Peggy Holcomb, who (formerly?) was a Democratic party devotee, and Western Circuit Judge David Sweat. Some of the more predictable attendees included the Republican nominee for the 113th House seat in Hank Huckabee, Oconee County Board of Education member Kim Argo and Bishop city council member Nedra Johnson as well as two term 46th district State Senator Bill Cowsert.
State Senator Bill Cowsert
Among other things from her stump speech, the Washington, DC born Handel addressed her writing a check to the Log Cabin Republicans and took questions from the audience. She spoke passionately about wanting to make government small and how she has been a conservative all her life. While never mentioning her opponent by name, she did make inferences of former Democratic Congressman's convenient conversion to the Republican side of life as being politically expedient.
Hank Huckaby and Peggy Holcomb
Watkinsville City Council member Samantha Purcell attended and wanted to ask her a question about teachers, but could not last as long as the event continued. Handel repeated her Christian values, and she allowed that abortion should be allowed in the case of rape and incest.
I think she misspoke when she said illegal aliens should be the only ones allowed to vote (probably meaning to say legal aliens).
Handel claimed to have been underestimated her entire life and detailed how she wanted to have a family and left an abusive family situation at age 17 to work her way up to the Bush-Quayle White House, where she worked for Vice President Qualye's wife Marilyn to promote breast cancer awareness.
She parked her big coach on Main Street in Watkinsville after appearing at the arches in Athens. Tomorrow her opponent Nathan Deal will make an appearance in Watkinsville.
Just saw Karen Handel being interviewed by Blake Aued of the Athens Banner-Herald in front of the UGA arch with a dozen students looking very sweaty

Republican run off recommendations - PSC
I cannot emphasize how dangerous it would be for all of the people of Georgia to elect Winterville resident Tim Echols to the Public Service Commission. If you desire someone who would want us to have a theocracy in our state government, then this would be the perfect person for you. Do not be fooled by his faux populist rhetoric. He is a person motivated by his bizarre religious and extremist views who was John Oxendine's campaign manager before he recognized the rats were abandoning that sinking ship.
I highly recommend voting for former State Senator John Douglas of Social Circle if you choose the Republican ballot for the run off.
Thank you for your consideration and do not support Tim Echols.

Before it's delivered
Friend -- Today's the President's 49th birthday, and I just heard how many of you have signed his birthday card so far: 1,266,611 as of this morning. It's already an amazing show of support. But before the card is delivered with all of your signatures, I want to make sure you have one more chance to add your name -- I just added mine. Will you sign it with me, if you haven't already? Thanks, David Plouffe -----------------Original Message----------------- From: Michelle Obama Subject: Will you sign Barack's birthday card with me? Friend -- Every year, our family tries to come up with a fun way to wish Barack a happy birthday. And this August 4th, when he turns 49, I have something new in mind. This has been a big -- and hectic -- year for him. After signing the Affordable Care Act and Wall Street reform into law -- and completing his first year as president -- I think it's safe to say we will remember it for a long time. And I know full well how much he credits this movement, and the work of supporters like you, for the change that we've accomplished. So I'm putting together a birthday card that I would like you to sign. Together with other Organizing for America supporters -- and me, Malia, Sasha, and Bo -- we'll wish him a happy birthday and let him know that we're ready to take on the year ahead alongside him. Will you wish Barack a happy birthday with me? This year also brought a lot of surprises -- some good and some bad. Supporters like you have helped him make the best of it -- by contacting Congress to help push stalled legislation forward, by re-engaging supporters in the political process, by giving back with service projects across the country, and so much more. And while we can't know what the coming year will bring, all of us, working together, will continue pushing forward for change. Will you help make this a memorable birthday for Barack and wish him a happy 49th? http://my.barackobama.com/birthday Thanks so much, Michelle Obama

Congressman Broun denies Federal help in local chemical spill
After waiting nearly an hour to ask a question during an unsolicited call to constituents Monday evening, I asked Congressman Paul Broun if he would help Oconee and Clarke counties by getting the US Environmental Protection Agency involved in the clean up or monitoring of the spill at the J&J Chemical Company into Trail Creek and subsequently into the North Oconee River. He declined, stating that the Federal agency defers to the State Agency and was therefore already involved.

David is an old friend and a great person to run the music business certificate program at UGA since he has pretty much done it all: bass player for Sugar, engineer for a thousand bands' recordings, and a top notch person to guide students witness his years at the helm of Athens Little League. Athens 5 points besieged by barricaded suicidal frat boy Saturday, incident ends without damage
Saturday night Athens police were seen brandishing automatic weaponry in response to a barricaded potential suicide situation in an unknown fraternity house near the intersection of Lumpkin and Milledge in the area known as Five Points. Apparently the father of the distraught frat boy talked him out of taking his own life. Many area residents were concerned over the sight of police running around with automatic weapons drawn and the complete lack of coverage in the Athens media by mid afternoon Sunday.
