Luken announces Re-election plans, supports Walter for Mayor

My best guess was wrong. Watkinsville Mayor Jim Luken will not be seeking re-election (to a fourth term?) and instead supporting the candidacy of current council member and one time Code Enforcement Officer Joe Walter to be the next Mayor of Watkinsville. It will be interesting to see if any of the announced candidates draw any opposition this time, and I would guess they would not, but look what happened last time I tried to predict something. --- On Fri, 8/21/09, Jim Luken <mayor@cityofwatkinsville.com> wrote: From: Jim Luken <mayor@cityofwatkinsville.com> Subject: RE: Re-election plans? Oconee County Democratic party Response To Anti-Healthcare Protest (Details Below)

Last night's Oconee County Democratic Committee meeting was an overflow session of some serious plans of action to let the world know that some folks here support our President and his plans to make insurance more affordable for all Americans. This pre-emptive activity is planned for the Watkinsville library on Experiment Station Road (just off Main Street) 5:30 pm this Thursday, August 27 to start making signs with slogans. Chairman Jonathan Veit has outlined a plan to respond in kind to the event planned from 10 to 12 am on the Oconee County Veterans Park monument. The gist of the message is that we are not going to take this crap lying down. We are going to turn out and carry signs and try our best to be non-confrontational. The following is the message so you do not have to click through to the link: For those who have not heard, area Republicans, using the title "Citizens For Ethical Government," have organized what they are calling "Oconee Healthcare Reform Pro

Mayor Luken keeping it close to the vest concerning re-election plans

Image
Perhaps stinging from the last time around when he announced he was not seeking re-election and then more or less had to when no one else qualified, Mayor Jim Luken of Watkinsville may or may not seek another term for the helm of the municipal government of the County seat. When asked in a recent email as to whether he was seeking another term, the current Mayor was very coy in his reply:. "I will announce my future direction very soon first to the City Council and then send you an answer," wrote Luken after allowing that the widening of Wilson Road may indeed be included in the SPLOST list. Qualifying commences this time next week. This blog writer would bet on another Luken term right now.

Dr. Pat Priest pens article about Saturday Strolls in Oconee Enterprise

Image
Great to see our own Oconee County Democrat Dr. Patricia Priest penning an article for the Oconee Enterprise newspaper about this past Saturday's Stroll with State Rep. Bob Smith . She may be the perfect counterbalance to Oconee County GOP chair Jay Hanely at least as far as the perception of Democratic versus Republican on the writing end of the newspaper. I am in no way besmirching Mr. Hanley's journalistic integrity but we are what we are, and perception is everything in the media realm. Kindly attend tonight's Oconee County Democratic Committee meeting at the Governmental Annex on State Route 15/Greensboro Highway if you can. Socializing commences at 7:00 pm and meeting begins at 7:30 pm, with this being our first post Becky Vaughn era meeting. The meeting room is around in the back nearly the side entrance.

President Obama's health care reform is under attack here in Oconee County with a rally at the Oconee Veterans Park August 29. This is a good start to try and find a way to counter their lies hall over Northeast Georgia as well. Please attend this meeting if you can. Looks like an Oconee County protest for President Obama's health care reform - can anyone say Let's Support our Commander in Chief?

I do not agree with the insurance industry led protests of these misguided buffoons, but I support their right to peaceably assemble, even next to my beloved soccer field. Wonder how many Nazi and Communist symbols will be on display? Sounds like the nuts will be out in force for this one, not just the birthers and deathers. No Death Panel discussions? Support your President, people. Congressman Paul Broun will be in the house. The following was swiped from the Athens GOP blog. Somebody tell Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann quickly. Oconee Healthcare Reform Protest Exercise you First Amendment rights by joining The Citizens for Ethical Government in a peaceful demonstration against the various healthcare “reform” proposals being put forth by congressional Democrats and the Obama Administration. The event, slated for Saturday, August 29, will take place at 10:30 a.m. at Oconee Veterans Park, located on Highway 53 in Watkinsville. Invited speakers include State Representative Bob Smit
