Passenger identified as Jessica Cannon of Brasleston in jeep-big rig wreck Monday

Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry announces that the passenger in the fatal crash on Ga 316 Monday evening has been positively identified as 20 year old Jessica Cannon of Braselton, Georgia. I want to express my sincere appreciation to the Georgia State Crime lab and GBI Director Vernon Keenan for giving this case their personal attention and their help in giving this young ladies family some closure. I also want to thank Dr. Eric W. Jones, DMD and his staff who expedited dental record delivery to the lab which facilitated this identification.  The driver has not been positively identified as of now. This is a priority for the Crime Lab and their will let us know as soon as they have completed their work. I trust that before you post a comment you will think it through and remember this young lady has family and friends that love her. If you can't do that, you probably shouldn't post it here. Tourism Director Peggy Holcomb announces retirement - Oconee Enterprise: News  Warning: now leaving objectivity zone. I worked for her predecessor and have seen the leaps and bounds that the tourism industry has grown in a relatively short time. I am good friends with Peggy Holcomb, and she has done a fantastic job making Oconee County, Georgia a more visible place to visit on next to no budget for the last several years.  I applaud her efforts and know that she will be enjoying her retirement with grandchildren and other loved ones.

In a largely uneventful regular meeting for the month of September, it was announced that Gary Crider, who has pretty much been in on everything with Watkinsville Woods from day one, will be paid $16.00 an hour for 20 hours a week to officially get paid as a 1099 Contractor (not a city employee). Gary Crider using his trail saw. Pardon me if I editorialize much earlier than usual in these newsy reports, but this may be the best possible hire for the ambitious Watkinsville Woods with photographer and weed warrior Gary Crider, living adjacent to the property to begin with, been pulling long hours for months yanking invasive shrubbery and keeping the rare plants,  and has an army of volunteers of all ages at his rarely needed assistance. He has worked on many areas in Athens and surrounding areas as a volunteer.  Among others who have worked long hours on the Watkinsville Woods project that I have been profoundly grateful to meet is Walt Cook, who has the trail named after him in

316 East closed at McNutt Creek Monday evening due to trailer/car wreck

316 eastbound at McNutt Creek is closed at this time due to a serious wreck. Expect it to be closed for an extended amount of time.  The wreck at 316/McNutt Creek Road involves a big rig and a passenger car. The passenger car is trapped under the trailer, and we have not been able to get into the car. We are trying to get equipment to the scene to get the trailer off of the car. The tag on the car does not come back to the immediate Oconee area. As we have not been able to get into the car, we have not been able to make any identifications or even determine how many people are inside of it. Expect the road to be closed for a considerable period of time. The trailer involved in the wreck earlier tonight at 316/McNutt Creek is loaded with huge spools of paper. They are having to be off loaded. Once empty, the trailer will have to be loaded onto something else to move it from the scene due to the damage. Until the trailer is removed, we can't recover the occupants of the
