Watkinsville, Ga. – Georgia DOT announces crews will cross cut Mars Hill Road next week, if weather cooperates.                                     "Monday through Wednesday, crews will cross cut the road in two places; on Mars Hill Road at Riverhaven Rd and on Riverhaven Road to install drainage structures. There will be intermittent lane closures Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at these two sites," explained Harold Mull, Georgia DOT District Construction Engineer. The project will widen Mars Hill Road/Oconee Connector from State Route 316 to State Route 53/Hog Mountain Road improving mobility locally in Watkinsville and for the region in to and out of Clarke County. The lunch and dining choices for restaurant goers in Watkinsville expanded with the unanimous approval and addition of The Traveling Hobo Cafe at 20B Greensboro Highway. This is the former location of the Big Easy Cafe and several other restaurants as well as next door to Kiki's Bake shop. Watkinsville street department hard at work Amkee Ervin recently moved to Bishop from Savannah where they developed the concept for the burger based restaurant (Sliverado's Saloon and Kitchen in Savannah) that will be open for lunch and dinner here in Watkinsville very soon. They are hoping for an opening during the first week of September contingent upon health department inspection and approval, per the City Council approval. DELAYS ON MARS HILL ROAD THIS WEEK Watkinsville, Ga. – Georgia DOT announces new bridge beams for the Mars Hill Road Bridge over Barber Creek will be set in place Wednesday and Thursday, if weather cooperates. “The plan is to set beams Wednesday and Thursday. We expect the beams setting to start about 10:30 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m., major delays are expected along Mars Hill Road. One lane of traffic over the Barber Creek Bridge will be closed while beams are set. Traffic will be allowed across the bridge one direction at a time guided by Flaggers. Each time a beam is hoisted into place, traffic will be completely stopped for about 10 minutes. Please avoid this section of Mars Hill Road if possible Wednesday and Thursday,” explained Brent Cook, Georgia DOT District Engineer serving Oconee County.
