Winning the future

Image
Friend -- Three days from now, on Tuesday, January 25th, I will stand before Congress and the country to discuss the State of the Union. Two years ago, when I first addressed a joint session of Congress, this country faced a crisis unlike anything since the Great Depression -- an economy that had spiraled out of control, putting millions out of work. Today, we're in a different place. An economy that was shrinking is now growing again. But across the country, millions are struggling every day -- to find work, to pay their bills, to provide for their families. It is clear that the moment we now face demands a vision for how we as a people will win the future. And that vision -- that agenda -- will be the topic of my State of the Union address. As the messengers, volunteers, and organizers of this movement, you will play a critical role in carrying out that agenda. Because of that, I want you to have an advance look at what I'll ask of Congress on Tuesday. I've

Promises Kept

Friend -- It was two years ago today that Barack and I were sworn in, and I remember what he said like it was this morning: "The challenges we face are real, they are serious, and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America: They will be met." Even then, we knew it would take time. We knew it would be hard. And we knew we would sometimes make mistakes. But we did not lose sight of what we came to do. Together, we took on difficult issues that had been put off for decades. And some say we have accomplished more in two years than any administration since Roosevelt's. Take it from me, that's something you should take to heart -- because none of it would have been possible without your hard work. But the job's not done. I am reminded of that every time I travel to the small towns in Pennsylvania, Iowa, New Mexico -- all over -- and on the weekends I get home to Delaware. I meet folks who are sti

No other way to put it

Friend -- At 5:53 p.m. Eastern Time today, the House moved to repeal health insurance reform. Every single Republican -- all 242 -- voted for repeal. This is a vote for insurance companies. There is no other way to put it. Because if the question is what is best for Americans, repeal would never come up: Health reform is already at work improving the lives of millions of people. Repeal will result in 32 million fewer Americans with health coverage -- and add $230 billion to the deficit over the next 10 years. Republicans in Congress need to know there's a political price to pay for siding with special interests over the constituents in their districts. We're putting together a dedicated team of organizers and volunteers across the country to protect our progress on health reform -- and we need 11 donations from your area to make sure they have the resources they need. Chip in $3 or more to support Organizing for America and help stop repeal before it'

Call Speaker Boehner out on repeal

Image
Friend -- Tomorrow, House Republicans led by John Boehner will vote on the repeal of health reform -- moving to end the law that keeps insurance companies in check. From denying coverage to children with pre-existing conditions, to pursuing profits with no accountability, to raising rates arbitrarily on families and businesses and canceling coverage when people get sick -- insurers could return to promoting their own financial health at the expense of those seeking care. And with repeal estimated to add $230 billion to the deficit over the next 10 years, the Republicans' first agenda item delays our economic recovery and does nothing to create jobs. Repealing the Affordable Care Act is bad for our health, our economy, and our country -- and Speaker Boehner needs to know where we stand. Call him now at 202-225-6205. Tell him to stop playing political games and end the wasteful, hurtful repeal of health reform. Then click here to let us know how it went. According

Successful clean up for Oconee Connector on MLK Jr. Day

Image
A half dozen hearty souls bared rain and the remnants of snow to pick up a gazillion cigarette butts and assorted debris along side the Oconee Connector essentially between the Golden Pantry and the Quick Trip. This clean up was rescheduled from Saturday because of the snow on the side of the road. Not all had melted by Monday. Melissa Steele, Pat Priest, Sara Jane Love, Dan Matthews, and Robert Wyatt Many thanks to the volunteers including Mary Mellein, Sara Jane Love, Pat Priest, Melissa Steele, Ann Stoneburner, Dr. Robert Wyatt and Dan Matthews for coming out on a soggy holiday. The group met at the Barber Creek Fire Station and divided up and picked up trash on both sides of the road, one group heading toward the busy Highway 316 and the other past the Quick Trip and the Golden Pantry. The smart and experienced people brought bags and clean up tools to pick up the trash near the side of the roads. The oncoming traffic kept the volunteers dodging vehicles to grab the wrappers

Marvin Gaye sings American National Anthem

Image

Best National Anthem Ever?

I remember Pearl Bailey performing it once before a New York Yankees World Series where she walked around a bit and it was pretty phenomenal. Whitney Houston after 9/11 was pretty good. I am old enough to remember the grief given Jose Feliciano for the slightest bit of deviation in the 1968 World Series in Detroit. I also fondly recall the "Sexual Healing" rendition performed before the NBA All Star game in maybe 1983? What is your favorite?

The Marietta Daily Journal - Dems get down to business

Anyone familiar with recent political history in Georgia can recall a time in the early Reagan era when Cobb County might have been the only Republican enclave in Georgia, now it has come full circle to be one of the last areas of Democratic strength in the state. The minority party needs a foundation to rebuild somewhere, and it might as well begin in the one-time Republican bases of Cobb and Gwinnett counties.
